The Evolution of Glensound Electronics
In business for over 50 years, Glensound Electronics has created
a rich heritage with thousands of designs completed...

C

ustom designs and solutions are
still a major part of our operations,
complemented by key products in various
areas of the audio broadcast industry.
Glensound was established in 1966 by BBC
Design Engineer Len Davis. In 1966, Len
invented the world's first telephone balancing
unit for use on BBC Radio's first phone-in
programme It's Your Line.
In the same year, the BBC asked Len to
design and manufacture a specialist audio
broadcast unit for use at Prince Charles'
investiture, the first of many customdesigned products Glensound has produced
for the BBC.

In the 1970s, the first semi-modular
unitised mixing desk was designed and
manufactured for the BBC. In the 1980s,
BBC Outside Broadcast took delivery of the
world's first assignable mixer, designed and
manufactured by us. In the 1990s, another
innovation; we introduced the world's first
portable battery-operated ISDN codec,
making the operator more mobile, and
changing the face of broadcasting forever.
In the early 1990s, Glensound designed and
supplied the sound installation at the House
of Commons and House of Lords, which we
upgraded to next generation sound provision
in 2016 and 2017, respectively.

2011 was a busy year at Glensound; we
launched the world's first digital stand-alone
commentary system - The Talent Box followed by the world's first broadcast HD
voice mobile phone range, the MPI004HD,
which was recognised in 2012 by IABM
with an Award for Excellence in Design
and Innovation. To make a 2011 hattrick, Glensound, in partnership with RTS/
Telex, introduced the world's first hybrid
commentary and intercom unit, the COIN
GT-013.
Glensound has won many other awards
over the years. Our DARK 1616M won Best
in Show at NAB in 2017, our GS-HA014
won Best in Show at NAB in 2015, and at
IBC in Amsterdam in 2014 our Cub won
Best in Show from PSNEurope. Proud of
our heritage, we continue in the vanguard of
design and innovation with Network Audio
& Dante™ / AES67 compliant intercoms.
The newest addition is the Beatrice range of

intercoms.
Beatrice works with standard network
switches and has no requirement for
a central processing rack, resulting in
reduced costs and less complex installation
requirements. The BEATRICE R8 unit, an
8-channel intercom rackmount, won two
Best in Show awards at NAB 2018.
