Highlights iAM Series
Wohler Technologies discusses the transition to IP and how the company is continually developing
its solutions to meet future requirements...
BroadcastAsia: Can you give us a brief
overview of what we can expect in the next
six to 12 months within your sector?
Wohler Technologies: The broadcast
industry will continue its transition to IP as
well as the newer requirements to monitor 4K
and, to a slightly lesser extent, Dolby® Atmos.
At Wohler we are continually developing our
monitoring and measurement products to
meet current and future evolutionary and
regulatory requirements. Integral to this
process, we ensure that we continue to
offer maximum flexibility, ease of use and,
importantly, an easy upgrade path to future
requirements, standards and formats.
BCA: Can you explain the benefits
in regard to the latest product
announcements?
WT: For both Wohler and our customers,
it is important that our products continue to
support traditional formats, as well as the
newer IP formats. With our new iAM series
we can support traditional signals, analogue,
AES3, 3G/HD/SD-SDI and MADI, while at the
same time offering options for VoIP formats

(SMPTE 2110, SMPTE 2022 and MPEG2 TS),
AoIP formats (Dante, Ravenna, AES67). All of
these new products are network-ready, offer
a comprehensive feature set, simplicity of use
and contain APIs for third-party control by
other devices.
BCA: What challenges did you face when
designing the products?
WT: AoIP & VoIP are still relatively new
requirements for audio/video monitoring
and metering within the broadcast world.
The iAM series represents our first range of
products that have been specifically designed
to address these needs. When creating a new
range, we consult heavily with our customer
base to confirm not only the mix of signals,
but how they need those signals presented to
them via either the front panel or GUI and how
they need our products to interact with other
equipment in the facility, via integration or the
use of APIs. For the first time, each product

within the iAM range features on-board
web-GUI for monitoring and configuring the
units remotely, while the iAM Audio and iAM
Video-2 both feature touchscreen operation
and a GUI, developed in consultation with our
end users.
Our customers require us to provide
future-proof and upgradeable solutions to
keep up with evolving industry standards
and operational needs, but without the need
to invest in completely new products. Our
hardware and software architecture are
designed to support easily changeable SFP
technology, while at the same time offering
multiple signal options.
BCA: Can you advise on your ideal market
for these products/services?
WT: Our range of signal monitoring and
metering solutions are used in areas of
master control rooms, playout facilities,
uplink and downlink head-ends, OB Trucks,
live sports and anywhere where confidence
audio/video monitoring is required.

BCA: Which territories do you think will
show particular interest?
WT: Inevitably, some markets are slower to
adapt to new technologies than others and
that is where our iAM series is the perfect
solution for the customer. As the iAM series
supports existing and new formats into a
single platform, customers are able to use
this new series of products for their existing
formats, safe with the knowledge that when
they migrate to IP at a future date, they can
add IP options to their existing units. It is a
major benefit for customers to be able to
invest in one product that offers the flexibility
to accommodate their ongoing technology
needs at a relative minimal cost.
BCA: Any future product innovations
ahead that you can discuss?
WT: As our products are defined and
developed to respond to our customers'
needs, it goes without saying that we are
continually evaluating potential changes in
technology within the industry. A current
example is 4K monitoring. As with any
development opportunity, if the market
creates sufficient demand, we will investigate
how best to develop solutions to meet those
needs.
