he team will be demonstrating how cloud
dubbing is changing the game for TV and
movie localisation - and how it can make an
impact for the industry in Asia-Pacific.
The cloud-powered localisation service
provider has been busy shaking up the
industry this year, especially in dubbing. After
five years providing cloud-based subtitling
services to the global TV and movie industry
- and delivering over 21 million minutes of
subtitled footage in the process - the vendor
has also branched out into the world of
dubbing services. However, the philosophy
has remained the same - the application
of innovation and technology to tackle real
problems facing the TV and movie industry.

Dubbing Done Differently
In order to power its dubbing service, ZOO
has gone back to the drawing board, asking
the question - if we were to invent dubbing
from scratch today, with the technology we
now have at our finger tips, what would we
do to make it as scalable, efficient and secure
as possible?
Tasked with this mission, an entire
Research and Development team at ZOO set
to, and created, a platform called ZOOdubs
that powers its dubbing service using cloud
technology and works just like an online
recording studio.
ZOO uses this new technology to record
in-territory using a combination of traditional
studios and other controlled recording
environments. Using the ZOOdubs platform
has enabled the dubbing director of each
language adaptation of a project to work
centrally from anywhere in the world during

recording sessions while directing voice
actors live in the cloud. This new approach
gives clients the choice of working with talent
located in a studio or at a pre-assessed
'controlled recording environment', such as
at the voice artist's home studio. In doing so,
it has opened up opportunities for a far wider
pool of carefully-vetted voice artists.
Meanwhile, the cloud software allows
projects to be coordinated, mixed and
packaged from LA and London so that ZOO
can ensure that all projects meet the stringent
standards required for distribution.

Changing the Localisation Game
In the last year, ZOO has used cloud
dubbing to record in-territory in all key
dubbing languages. The feedback from
content owners as well as dubbing
professionals involved in the service has

been excellent.
Having an entire dubbing team connected
and working online in a central, ultra-secure
system keeps the process streamlined and
efficient. For the first time, dubbing doesn't
need to be cost prohibitive. As a result, it has
opened up new revenue streams for different
types of content such as factual, dramas
and movies, all of which are in demand from
global audiences.
Further, voice talent and dubbing directors
have picked up the process as though it's the
way they've always worked, which means
more and more voice actors and directors
have joined ZOO's network of translators and
passed on the good word.
ZOO's cloud dubbing service has also
gained industry recognition with three award
wins at keynote events in the entertainment
calendar in the last year. The dubbing service
won TV Technology's Best of Show Award
at NAB 2017, followed by the Design and
Innovation award for Post Production at IBC
2017. Recently, ZOO picked up the IABM's
brand new BaM Award at NAB 2018.
So, what's the next step?

Launching Cloud Dubbing
to Asia-Pacific

ZOOdubs powers its dubbing service using cloud technology

At BroadcastAsia 2018, ZOO will be
launching cloud subtitling and dubbing
services for Asia-Pacific, including Korea,
Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, India, Pakistan and
UAE. To capitalise on this, ZOO's partnership
with Kantana Group is set to expand in

Thailand and Vietnam. The production
company has been trained in ZOO's cuttingedge software and is currently using
ZOOdubs to work on numerous in-territory
dubbing projects. Kantana will help ZOO to
build capacity, increase the local dubbing
talent pool and coordinate a choice of interritory traditional and alternative recording
environments. This gives content owners
the flexibility to choose where they want their
projects dubbed while making it financially
viable to dub a far wider variety of content
without compromise to quality.
Further, for BroadcastAsia 2018 ZOO will
welcome on board Norie Negishi, Head of
Operations and Business Development,
Asia. Norie has a twenty-year track record
with the Walt Disney Company in AsiaPacific including being Executive Director
of Operations for Disney Character Voices
International.
