New Interoperability
and Data Opportunities
in AoIP Transport

A

s more broadcasters transition away from
legacy TDM networking solutions and
toward IP, GatesAir continues to bring new
innovations to market that help broadcasters
increase transport reliability, enhance
network security, and introduce new business
opportunities.
The introduction of GatesAir's IP Link
codec family several years ago proved that IP
transport could be robust and reliable while
reducing capital and operational expense.
The IP Link 100 and 200 codecs first came
to market with technologies never-beforeseen in broadcast. This includes Dynamic
Stream Splicing (DSS), a unique GatesAir
technology that sends multiple identical
streams over the same network, or two
separate paths. Each stream borrows data
from companion streams to avoid artefacts
and service interruptions from packet loss.
For the first time, broadcasters realised they
could achieve the same reliability with IP
transport as with T1/E1 transport.
At BroadcastAsia, GatesAir is bringing two
new intelligent IP networking solutions to
market that retain these core technologies
and benefits, and furthermore address the
latest emerging trends and challenges in IP
transport: AES67 interoperability, and secure
data management.

AES67 Interoperability
GatesAir will make significant strides in
interoperable audio networking with the
introduction of the Intraplex IP Link 200A,
the company's first AES67-compliant Audio
over IP codec. The IP Link 200A allows
broadcasters to seamlessly interconnect
studios and remote locations, including
transmitter sites, using the AES67 standard
and any of today's encoding algorithms
across wide-area IP networks.
The IP Link 200A is a hybrid model

that interconnects AES67 and Analogue/
AES3 signals simultaneously and enables
conversion between the two formats. With
dedicated channels for both, users still
operating in Analogue or AES3 mode have
a future-proof path to an industry-adopted
Audio over IP standard. Additionally, those
operating in mixed mode can seamlessly
convert between the AES67 and Analogue/
AES3 as desired. In any scenario, the IP Link
200A simplifies the cabling and removes
limitations on location of the codec.

flexibility to interconnect audio using AES67,
Analogue/AES3 or in a mixed mode and
provides a transitional path to an all-Audio
over IP interconnect," says Rich Redmond,

requirements from our codecs to the wide
area network, and provides our customers
with a true AES67 Audio over IP device that
is interoperable with today's leading Audio
over IP solutions, including WheatNet-IP,
Ravenna and Livewire+. The IP Link 200A
is a timely innovation that adds to our long
legacy of intelligent IP networking solutions."
As with other IP Link codecs, the IP Link
200A integrates award-winning features
that enhance stream reliability and network
security, among other benefits. This includes
GatesAir's groundbreaking Dynamic Stream
Splicing software, and integration of a firewall

and advanced packet filtering capabilities
strengthen network security. This protects
against outside intrusions to ensure rocksolid, on-air signal protection.

Secure Data Transport
Speaking of protection and security,
GatesAir will introduce the second-generation
of its Intraplex IPConnect content stream
transport solution, now a standalone halfrack hardware device for data protection
capability to a broadcaster's audio
contribution and distribution network.
As a standalone device, IPConnect provides
rock-solid reliability and network security for
virtually all types of IP data originating from
IP audio codecs, HD Radio streams and
remote control applications via SNMP or the
web. It can be used as an IP Gateway or
local area network bridge device to support
point-to-point applications (STL, studioto-studio, remote contribution) as well as
multipoint distribution (SFNs, DAB/DAB+
networks, content syndication). IPConnect
fortifies data transport across IP networks
by minimising data loss associated with
dropped packets, employing a combination
of packet protection schemes with network/
time diversity and packet-level forward error
correction.
In addition to strengthening data transport,
the new IPConnect device adds new builtin monitoring features such as SafeIP to

manage redundancy for external IP sources
and bandwidth measurement capability tools
to help broadcasters confirm network health
and capacity before launching an application.
For network protection, IP Link Connect
enhances security through the ability to
tunnel all IP data between one or more sites,
eliminating concerns of outside interference.
IPConnect's software provides extra
protection through packet encapsulation,
which encloses the external IP data packets
in a GatesAir protocol wrapper as it moves
across IP networks. IPConnect uniquely
provides this protection for studio-generated
data, as well as IP data from external
sources. While the former might include
RDS data or SNMP control signals to trigger
a command at the transmitter site, the latter
may incorporate programme or control data
coming from a network operations centre,
satellite feed or advertising service.
