NeuLion Unveils Enhancements
to OTT Offerings
Chris Wagner, Executive Vice President,
NeuLion discusses the company's newest
technology enhancements ahead
of BroadcastAsia 2018...
BroadcastAsia: Can you give us a brief
overview of what we can expect in the next
six to 12 months within your sector?
Chris Wagner: No matter what device
the consumer prefers, today's live and ondemand OTT services must consistently
impress the viewer with broadcast-quality
streaming and engaging content. Over the
next six to 12 months, reducing vendor
fragmentation will be the next big push in
OTT. Content owners and content rights
holders will be looking for opportunities to
reduce the number of technology vendors
they work with, while remaining agile enough
to innovate, improve, and enhance their
direct-to-consumer OTT services.
Keeping in mind, the winners in the OTT
direct-to-consumer (D2C) business are the
sports and entertainment rights holders
that offer their viewers the best content, the
best service and the best overall experience.
When this is achieved, the return on
investment is more subscribers, less churn,
and maximum return on the digital rights.
BCA: Can you explain the benefits in
regard to the latest service announcements?
CW: As one of the leading OTT technology
and services companies in the market,
NeuLion has continued to deliver new
technology enhancements and managed
services to our customers, that make the
end-to-end delivery of an OTT service faster,
easier and more reliable.
First and foremost, it all starts with content,

content and stunning video quality available
on all the major consumer device categories,
make for a successful video strategy.
NeuLion is now offering our customers real
time access to "Watch Data" and periodic
insight reports into OTT subscriber trends.
The benefit of both help content owners and
rights holders attract new subscribers and
reduce churn.
The NeuLion Digital Platform monitors
activity as consumers connect, transact
and stream content on your OTT service.
Audience data or "watch data" is now
collected to provide OTT service providers
meaningful
insights
into
consumer
engagement trends. The data consists
of customer profiles, subscription data,
transaction data, methods of payments,
external data from Facebook, Amazon and
other sources, as well as quality of service
and quality of experience metrics.

BCA: What challenges did you face when
designing the service?
CW: One of the big challenges we faced
in collecting real-time "watch data" was
making sure we collected the data endto-end, starting with video ingestion and
video delivery, through the end user viewing
experience. The data must be collected
across multiple geographies and multiple
consumer devices.
NeuLion uses real time "watch data" to
control video Quality of Service (QoS) and
Quality of Experience (QoE). We have found
that when we focus on video quality, latency
or buffering churn rates can be reduced
significantly.
BCA: Which territories do you think will
show particular interest?
CW: OTT is a global market opportunity for
NeuLion. Our global headquarters is based in
New York, but new continental business units
have been opened in London, Singapore and
Dubai, giving us a local presence in many
markets.
As content owners and rights holders look
to improve their OTT services and reduce
technology complexity, NeuLion is now able
to react to these requirements in any global
territory around the world.

BCA: Can you advise on your ideal market
for these services?
CW: We expect to roll out these new
enhancements to the NeuLion Digital
Platform on a global basis. Content owners
and rights holders' interest in OTT continue
to grow, and is something broadcasters,
operators, media companies and live event
venues are looking to do all over the world.
BCA: Any future product innovations ahead
that you can discuss?
CW: People are getting used to living in a
world where their demands are instantly met.
One of the strategies to differentiate an OTT
service is targeting content and messages for
each unique viewer. Not just personalisation,
but also recommendations and advanced
features that offer the viewer exciting ways to
interact with the content.
In the coming quarters, NeuLion will
be rolling out enhancements aimed at
this exciting trend. For example, content
browsing & discovery - letting viewers
choose. With enhanced personalisation
capabilities, the subscriber can create their
own watch lists, favourites, preference
settings, and bookmarks coupled with deep
recommendation services.
