TMD Joins MediaVillage
at BroadcastAsia 2018
T. Vimalanathan (Nathan), Regional Sales Manager APAC, TransMedia Dynamics, reveals the company
will deliver a live demo of its software-defined workflows at BroadcastAsia 2018...
BroadcastAsia: Has BroadcastAsia 2018
come at a good time for the media industry?
Why?
Nathan: With so much change happening in
the broadcast space from both a technology
and business perspective, BroadcastAsia
2018 provides suppliers like TMD with a great
opportunity to update this important and
flourishing market on how best to improve their
workflows and make the most of their growing
assets across different platforms. NAB is the
great issue raiser of our industry, so having
BroadcastAsia follow on from NAB presents
us with a great opportunity to engage with the
local market and discuss how those issues are
affecting them.
BCA: What do you think are the key
developments in, or threats to, your market
sector at the current time?
N: The main development we see in the
world of workflow orchestration is a dramatic
increase in the rate of change and this is most
definitely an opportunity. The proliferation of
delivery channels and sources of media mean
the old "plan it and schedule it months in
advance" model of linear playout is gone. Now
with social media, if you can't react immediately
then you've missed the boat. Our customers are
looking for workflow and asset management
solutions that can be changed in real time, live,
without the need for a system reboot or use of
specialist resources. They need to be able to
change their workflows immediately - to accept
that new piece of content from a new source
and push the content to a new distribution
channel.
BCA: How is the company positioning itself
for the future of broadcasting?
N: TMD is a well-established provider of large
enterprise-class solutions, trusted by major
broadcasters worldwide - including big names
in the APAC region such as Astro and Discovery
- to deliver reliable efficient workflows.
As the pace, scale and complexity of
content assets grows, we believe the future of
broadcasting requires agile workflow solutions
that deliver speed and flexibility in workgroups
as well as enterprise-wide. Our latest solutions
embrace an Advance Message Queue Protocol
(AMQP) compliant message broker and utilise
micro services to easily scale functionality. Now

N: It is not so much the increase in live
production but the ways people want to
consume live content that is driving change
in the industry. Traditionally our users would
have broadcast a live transmission and then
perhaps followed up with an edited highlights
package. Today, they expect to be streaming
clips and short highlights packages with
commentary on social media in near realtime. This means they need an agile workflow
orchestration tool, which allows operators
to focus on the content and not get bogged
down in the process.

Users require an agile workflow orchestration tool

we can deliver focused solutions for just a few
users with the functionality they require today
but on the same platform used by our larger
clients - giving everyone confidence that their
TMD solution will scale as their needs increase.
Flexibility and adaptability is key, so all our
solutions can be deployed on premise, in the
cloud, or as a hybrid offering.
BCA: Are the latest technological
advancements
revolutionising
how
manufacturers determine new product
offerings? How challenging it is to address
these issues and keep ahead?
N: As a software developer, the use of
technologies such as message brokers and
micro services have allowed TMD to adopt a
truly agile approach to defining our product
offerings.
The main challenges we face today are
standards and security. Security requirements
have moved to another level. The days of
firewalled broadcast systems that are not
required to comply with any security policies
are behind us. Without a robust approach to
security and with an ever-increasing reliance
on the Internet for delivery and access, content
management systems risk data breaches
threatening the very media they are tasked
with managing. At TMD, development of new
products starts with security as the absolute
cornerstone of the product. We focus on
following industry best practice, using relevant
standards and of course our own expertise,
whilst providing enough flexibility to allow the
product to cope with as yet-unknown security
challenges.

In an industry that wants to be standardsbased, we need to provide leading edge
solutions that exploit the very latest
technological advancements even though
the standards-defining process lags behind
the technology. As the client you want to
buy standards-based products to provide
confidence that your system will support the
interoperability you need. As a manufacturer
chasing the technology curve, we need to
balance supporting standards while proving
the functionality our clients want. HTML5
players are a classic example of this; should
you stay with a standard compliant player,
knowing it will support all HTML media
formats today and importantly in the future,
or do you go with a customised player that
offers additional functionality but with the risk
of media format issues down the line?
BCA: Is the increase in live production
requirements changing the sector in any
way?

Mediaflex-UMS is a scalable,
cloud-native platform

BCA: Why should delegates visit your
stand at BroadcastAsia 2018?
N: This year we are excited to join our
partner MediaVillage on their booth 6H4-04.
Our team, who are based in our Malaysian
office, will be available to give visitors a live
demo of our software-defined workflows and
show them just how easy it is to take control
of workflows, create new and edit existing
ones. All this takes place whilst workflows
are running and without the need to employ
expensive third-party resources or in-house
programmes to effect change.
We'll also be sharing regional use cases
and recent customers' successes where
we've enabled organisations worldwide to
transform their workflows to manage and
monetise their assets efficiently. These
include Content Management revolutionising
OTT and linear services for Weigel
Broadcasting, a US multichannel private
broadcaster and Collections Management
for the National Archive of the Royal Hasmite
Court in Jordan.
