Phillip Adams, Managing Director, PHABRIX discusses the company's product range
at BroadcastAsia and how they are preparing for the future of broadcasting...
BroadcastAsia: Has BroadcastAsia come
at a good time for the media industry?
Why?
Phillip Adams: BroadcastAsia is a very
important show for us, as we see fantastic
potential in the APAC region. BroadcastAsia
provides us with an excellent platform to
present our reliable and agile IP/SDI, HDR
and HD/UHD test and measurement solutions
to some of the industry's most advanced
broadcasters and broadcast manufacturers in
the APAC region.
BCA: What do you think are the key
developments in, or threats to, your market
sector at the current time?
PA: Currently, the key technological
developments we're seeing are the increasing
use of file-based processing particularly when
combined with agile scalable cloud-based
systems; and the increasing interest in the
use of IP for live production - particularly
with the use of the SMPTE 2110 family of
standards in conjunction with PTP. This is also
an enabling technology for remote production.
Furthermore, with the availability of HDR
contribution feeds from the Olympics and the
World Cup, this is the year that live sports
HDR production and distribution becomes a
practical reality. We have also seen the launch
of immersive audio services from some of the
commercial sports pay-TV operators.
In addition, 12G-SDI is gathering
momentum fast for UHD applications with
many customers having to make informed
choices between SDI and IP infrastructure
adoption. There is a real need for informed

economics of the production to which they
are being applied - i.e. they are appropriate
to that market sector. There is no 'cook-book'
for this right now and there are many different
groups all trying to figure out what this means
for them and their next steps.

and pragmatic decision making influenced by
business values.
However, while the use of file and cloud
processing is now readily accepted and
mainstream, Live IP and HDR are still very
much at the early adopter and Proof of
Concept (PoC) stage with a great deal of
confusion in the market.
BCA: How is the company positioning
itself for the future of broadcasting?
PA: PHABRIX continues to work closely with
its partners to understand what innovative
products and technologies can help drive
their businesses with the new workflows that
are enabled by these key developments. Our
latest products are true hybrid developments
equally at home in SDI, IP, and mixed
environments. We actively participate in early
adopter trials and PoCs and interop events
and help our partners debug their products
so that, as an industry, we all move forwards
with confidence. We also see a clear need
for education and training in these new
technologies across the sector.

BCA: Are the latest technological
advancements
revolutionising
how
manufacturers determine new product
offerings? How challenging is it to address
these issues and keep ahead?
PA: We continue to see an astonishing
increase in the capabilities that can be
squeezed into smaller and smaller sized
equipment. This is enabling a new generation
of trucks and facilities to be built with very
high levels of capability and flexibility. At
the same time many of these new enabling
formats are still in development. It's a journey
we are all embarking on - and we have some
very innovative partners who are also at the
forefront of adopting and adapting these new
cutting-edge technologies.
BCA: Is the increase in live production
requirements changing the sector in any
way?
PA: Live productions continue to grow,
both in quantity and also complexity
and sophistication. In many ways the
requirements are broadening with a greater
range tailored to different genres and market
sectors. This could be characterised as
fragmentation - but we've always had large
and small trucks tailored for different sizes of
events.
That being said, it is crucial that HDR,
immersive audio and remote production
workflows and working practices are
developed in such a way that they match the

BCA: Why should delegates visit your
stand at BroadcastAsia?
PA: Reliable and agile test and measurement
solutions have never been more important
as broadcasters grapple with a changing
landscape, including UHD (4K), HDR, the
transition to IP and shifting technology
standards. Our exceptional growth in the past
two years bears this out, and we continue
to anticipate industry needs, listen to our
customers and further expand our capacity
globally to provide the solutions and support
they need.
On the PHABRIX booth 6K3-12, we'll be
demonstrating SMPTE ST 2022-6 and ST
2110 support on our flagship Qx Series and
renowned handheld, the Sx TAG. Our Qx
Series' new 12G-SDI STRESS option will be
making its BroadcastAsia debut, providing
an advanced toolset for SDI interface stress
testing. Together with the Qx Series' fast,
automated 12G-SDI physical layer analysis
with RTE™ (Real-Time Eye) technology, it
provides a world-class solution to SMPTE
compliance verification.
We'll also be demonstrating our rackmounted Rx series for up to four channel
signal generation, analysis and monitoring
at BroadcastAsia 2018. Ideal for broadcast
QC in the studio, MCR or live production
truck, the Rx Series delivers 2K/3G/HD/SD
signal generation, analysis and monitoring for
faster compliance testing and fault diagnosis
of video and audio content. Its ultra-flexible,
user-defined instrument layout can present
up to 16 instruments simultaneously, ranging
from full screen to 1/16 screen. The Rx's
advanced diagnostics tools include RTE™
(Real-Time Eye) and jitter physical layer
analysis instruments, plus closed caption,
loudness and Dolby® monitoring.
PHABRIX is renowned for its range of
handheld instruments. In addition to the Sx
TAG, we will be demonstrating the SxE 3G/
HD/SD generation, analysis and monitoring
solution with advanced physical layer
analysis.
