BroadcastAsia:
Cloud-based
video
technologies have been available for a
while. Why has there been a recent spike in
interest for cloud deployments?
Steve Oetegenn: In the past, our customers
would talk about an undefined future in which
some administrative functions, but probably
never all video delivery, would be handled in
cloud environments. Now, the conversation is
about how and how soon.
Several
trends
are
happening
simultaneously that are pushing this
transformation of the video business:
* Video
creation
and
contribution
workflows are reaching critical mass in
the cloud.
* The scalability of adaptive bit rate (ABR)
video is proven and trusted.
* There is more emphasis on operating
expenditures
rather
than
capital
investments as the economics of video
consumption continue to change.
The conversation is quickly changing as the
economic gains and enhanced functionality
of the cloud become difficult to ignore.
BCA: What are the implications for
moving security to the cloud?
SO: The cost savings and new
opportunities that the cloud brings applies
to security, but it also raises challenges for
video service providers. The security threat
surface expands given the transparency and
ubiquitous connectivity of the cloud, while
for the same reasons concerns over privacy
multiply.
The best remedy for these challenges is
to outsource management of the cloud and
functions such as security to a specialist
already familiar with the problems through
established industry experience. The major
advancement in streaming over the Internet
has been the ability to deliver premium
video through the cloud. This has become
possible because specialists like Verimatrix
can protect UHD content and enable early
release windows through hardware-based
roots of trust and forensic watermarking,

Verimatrix can identify and investigate
suspicious behaviour on the network that
would otherwise be hard to monitor in a
traditional on-premises deployment. We

to integrate with the AWS Media Services
through the AWS Elemental MediaConvert
and AWS Elemental MediaPackage. This
allows pay-TV operators and content owners
to process and deliver high-quality video
streams for both broadcast TV and multiscreen devices with the security, scalability,
and simplicity of cloud-based solutions.
Video service providers are showing
growing confidence in the cloud and their
migration to it. Indeed, our own customers
are recognising that locating its VCAS
security platform in the cloud allows
provision of more effective anti-piracy
monitoring on behalf of the operator. In fact,
the results from a recent customer survey
show that nearly two-thirds are likely, or have
already migrated, its DRM/CA to the cloud -
over functions like encoding, VOD streaming
and SMS systems.

BCA: What is the intersection of security
and analytics for video service providers?
SO: The amount of data needed to
effectively compete is constantly growing.
With this need also comes security and
privacy concerns.
A proportion of the data collected is
confidential or sensitive and governed
by the growing number of regulations in
different regions. Protecting this data from
interception, compromise and eavesdropping
is critical not just for compliance with these
regulations, but also for gaining the trust of
consumers, upon which effective analytics
rely absolutely.
Verimatrix has some unique advantages in
the development of analytics for operators
due to its security heritage. Our Verspective
Analytics suite of solutions can provide
an additional layer of important data that
operators are otherwise unable to obtain.
Because of our "preferred real estate" in the
network and devices, our revenue security

BCA: How are security concerns being
addressed with IoT and blockchain
applications?
SO: There's no doubt that IoT introduces
new threats to individual consumers and
businesses, which are amplified by the
connectivity and transparency enabled
by the cloud. Individuals can be at risk
through eavesdropping of their personal
data or intrusion into their privacy through
unauthorised access to connected devices,
like security cameras. Businesses are at risk
particularly through recruitment of multiple
IoT devices in botnets for launching DDoS
attacks, of which there have been a series at
every increasing scale.
For service providers, IoT-related security
concerns relate to the visibility of devices
themselves and the knowledge of their
responsibilities or liabilities. They will want
to register devices attached to the services
they provide, determine their capabilities,
and understand how to update them and how
they behave. Service providers will then want
to establish whether and when they or their
customers are liable for attacks coordinated
with IoT devices within their footprint.

data from manufacturers and compliance
organisations to ecosystem operators.
