BCE Finds Flexibility Through
Connectivity - and IP-based KVM
Agility is the one big advantage broadcasters
look for these days...

I

n particular, being able to connect
operations in different locations to help
streamline operator workflows, enable
flexibility across teams and maintain seamless
24/7 broadcasting operations, without huge
operational costs.
This has resulted in the widespread adoption
of IP-based KVM (keyboard, video, mouse)
matrix, switching and extension systems,
which allow the remote control of multiple
computers and applications from a single
workstation.
One broadcasting company that is reaping
the benefits of IP-based, high-performance
KVM is Broadcasting Center Europe (BCE). As
a leader in media services, system integration
and software development in the areas
of television, radio, production and postproduction, telecommunication and IT, BCE's
power and influence within the broadcast
industry is remarkable - anyone who has ever
consumed media in Europe, will have gone

through the infrastructure of BCE.
In 2017, BCE moved from its premises in
Luxembourg to a new facility 500ft away
in RTL City. Despite only moving a short
distance, BCE couldn't risk wasting the
opportunity to create a future-proof operation.
Consequently, the move involved creating
brand new studios for television broadcast,
production, post-production and radio, as well
as new facilities for transmission, multimedia,
IT and resident partner broadcasters.
BCE selected Intronics, a connectivity
solutions expert, to design the new

infrastructure and agreed that IP-based KVM
technology would be the best option for
seamlessly connecting each of the broadcast
functions on the new site. BCE and Intronics
opted for ADDERLink Infinity, an IP-based
KVM solution that allows for flexible and
intuitive infrastructures.
Using the common copper and fibre IP
network with an IP-based, high-performance
ADDERLink Infinity KVM solution, BCE can
now connect all broadcast functions and
operators within its new facilities. This
is a huge operational advantage and a
scalable solution that simply would not have

been possible in the company's previous
premises.
The solution has enabled improved user
ergonomics and a level of flexibility
and scalability that only IP-based,
high performance KVM solutions can
provide. If BCE wants to move a number
of user end points to a different location,
for example, or if it decides to increase
the total number of end points required,
the changes do not require any dramatic
overhaul of the IT infrastructure.
The solution comes without distance
limitations, meaning that a post-production
studio at one end of the building can be
seamlessly connected to a broadcast studio
located elsewhere. It also comes without
restrictions on the number of connected
users or computers in a matrix. This is just
another example of how IP-based, highperformance KVM technology can deliver
unparalleled benefits to workflows and why
it has captured the attention of broadcasters.

FOX Sports Streamlines Live Remote
Production at 2018 FIFA World Cup
For the 2018 FIFA World Cup, FOX Sports wanted to avoid creating
entirely new production facilities in Russia...

I

nstead, the broadcaster wanted to leverage
IP-based transfer technology to use their
existing state-of-the art facilities in Los
Angeles.
The team needed to be able to ingest 20
HD-SDI feeds for each of the 64 matches
with two UHD-HDR feeds per match. For all
of these they had to create a cloud-based
HLS proxy, as well as deliver high-res AVC
Intra to Los Angeles, all of which must be
made available to their content management
system. AVC Intra was also written to local
storage for two edit bays in Russia. Most
importantly, the operation had to keep within
30 seconds of the live action in order to meet
audience expectation for live viewing.
To accomplish these goals, FOX Sports
relied on the integration between Telestream
Vantage, Lightspeed Live and IBM's Aspera
FASPStream to enable high-quality streaming
to remote production teams for near real-time
editing and production using standard IP
networks.

FOX Sports leveraged IP-based transfer technology

They installed 22 Lightspeed Live systems
to support camera ISOs and other feeds
not dedicated to the match, allowing them
to capture all event-related content into
the content management system. Four
feeds route high-res content directly to the
Los Angeles production facility via Aspera
FASPStream for editing in near-real-time.
Lightspeed Live, combined with Vantage
transcoding and workflows, provides direct
delivery of professional production formats

so that the content arrives "ready to work"
in Los Angeles. By delivering an edit-ready
format over IP direct into the editor storage
infrastructure, editors can consume the live
video almost instantaneously. The team has
also created a concurrent UHD workflow. With
the UHD-HDR requirement, they created a
library of material for feature pieces, typically
shot in UHD to provide the highest quality
end-product possible.
The solution includes two transmission

paths out of Russia. All the HLS feeds enter
AWS through direct connect in Frankfurt,
Germany and cross the globe through AWS
servers. They're then made available to
the content management system and the
production teams in Los Angeles.
This is all accomplished without requiring
expensive dedicated transmission lines. By
utilising only public internet data connections
(as opposed to dedicated point-to-point
fibre leased lines and/or satellite), the FOX
Sports team is assured that data lines are
always available, ubiquitous, and require
no proprietary equipment or scheduling
windows.
The FOX Sports team can now deliver
a single production feed from any given
remote production that can be dynamically
repurposed to production, delivery and
archival locations with growing file support
and transcode workflows. Full resolution onvenue recording can be scheduled, prioritised
and delivered during off-peak periods for
post-live production and archival uses.
