NAGRA Advances Cybersecurity Discussion
NAGRA is exhibiting at CommunicAsia booth 1J2-01, highlighting the ongoing challenge of protecting content...
BroadcastAsia: How has NAGRA advanced
the discussion on content protection
and cybersecurity in the media and
entertainment industry?
NAGRA: We've extended our capabilities
of fighting content streaming and ramped up
our efforts, communicating to the market that
streaming piracy through set-tops and via
apps and add-ons is a major security threat;
that specific actions need to be taken, and
that the clock is ticking. We've been proactive
in raising awareness and proposing solutions,
through both technological solutions and legal
expertise, that can help content owners and
service providers keep piracy under control.
We've also ramped up our media security
investments, adding NexGuard watermarking

technology and extending the capabilities
of our anti-piracy platform to tackle IPTV
streaming piracy. We have solutions to go
beyond traditional content protection and
encryption technologies to address illicit
streaming head-on with a proactive and
holistic approach to content value protection,
leveraging new cybersecurity technology and
creating anti-piracy ecosystems.
Our recent successes in anti-piracy include
our work with the International Broadcaster
Coalition Against Piracy (USA), CASBAA
(APAC), the Alianza (Latam) and the Deutsche
Football League, Bundesliga, for monitoring
and take-down services, as well as winning a
default judgement in the U.S. worth US$101
million in a lawsuit against China's Zhuhai
Gotech Intelligent Technology Co., LTD.,
alleged to operate a global piracy network
that sold millions of piracy-enabled set-top
boxes. As part of these alliances, we not only
work to protect operators' licensed content
from theft, but the alliances also conduct
consumer education campaigns to sensitise
consumers to piracy and the fact that any
pirate solution they invest in will ultimately

only end up being temporary because we
will ultimately succeed in disrupting the
service. Through education, we attempt
to convince consumers that the reliability
and quality of legal services is worth the
money.
BCA: How can NAGRA reduce the
availability of streams appearing
in Kodi users' interfaces?
N: NAGRA has an automated
monitoring platform that scans all
live channels and VOD assets available on
Kodi. The service we offer to our customers
automatically finds illegal distribution of
their content on Kodi and removes infringing
streams. By combining standard takedown
notifications with NAGRA advanced takedown
capabilities, we can remove most of the
infringing streams.
Beyond disrupting pirate streams, raising
of awareness amongst their users that these
services are illegal and helping service
providers deliver competing legitimate
services are also key areas in the fight
against premium IPTV piracy. Converting

users of such services to legitimate paying
subscribers
represents
a
significant
opportunity for content owners and
distributors.
In addition to Kodi-related anti-piracy
activities, NAGRA offers a service that
automatically finds illegal distribution of
content on Android applications, fully loaded
STBs, M3U playlist and other platforms that
provide plug-and-play solutions for the big
TV screen. This service also includes the
removal of infringing streams.

LiveU Matrix: IP/Real-Time Contribution
and Distribution for Broadcasters
As has been widely documented, the way that live news is now consumed, and the
sheer volume of it, has changed dramatically since the turn of the century...

T

his is driven by both the growth in
multichannel television and the huge
transformation in content viewing that the
Internet has driven.
Broadcasters need to be fleet-footed and
dynamic in the way that they cover news and
viewers now demand three things: instant
coverage of breaking news where the quality
can sometimes take second place to speed
of delivery; follow-up, in-depth coverage
where quality is all; and availability on multiple
devices.
Viewers also want - expect, even - live
news coverage of events that were previously
beyond the reach of traditional broadcast
technologies be that for cost, technical or
logistical reasons. Another key factor is

the rise in the use of IP and
IP networks in the broadcast
sector. Of course, LiveU's
technology is IP-based.
Our
