Making Radio for the 'Twitterati'

W

hat happens next is very interesting. My
son shares the "hilarious" video clip with
his friends through his social media channels
and a few days later in the car journey on the
way home from school, they're all talking
about what they enjoyed about the show that
morning and previous shows too. "Did you
hear that bit...", "Did you see that bit when..."
This highly mobile Twitterati audience
demands nothing but instantaneous content
which it will consume voraciously. Giving
your content longevity so it's not as quickly
discarded as found, will pay dividends as

you gain loyalty, and ultimately reach new
audiences. Thus, not only competing with,
but offering more than, Spotify and iTunes.
If you're one of those stations who have
not enhanced your offering and you're still
churning out the same as you did when my
beloved Roberts first crackled out a Wham
track years ago, then it's time to take action.
Not offering more will have no effect on the
Roberts-listening old dinosaurs making up
your ever-aging audience, but it will directly
affect growth of a new loyal young one.
It's worth bearing in mind if the radio is
on, and the Twitterati are
stationary, they won't be
listening anyway; they'll be
tweeting, Facebooking, or
texting. If you're involved
in TV and still reading,
you're feeling smug?
Don't. Recent statistics
published
by
Ofcom
show that 53% of all your
