T

he transition of broadcast infrastructure
from a traditional SDI to IP-based workflow
is well under way.
Some broadcasters and production
organisations have already embraced IP
workflows in their production centres and
OB vehicles and more are being constructed.
However, wholesale migration to IP-based
infrastructures will not happen quickly.
Constructing an entirely new broadcast
production centre is not a quick process, nor
is refitting an established one that operates
effectively on an SDI core.
IHSE KVM switching solutions are an
essential part of the existing broadcast
infrastructure: giving each person instant
access to every computer and tool within
their local facility. With just the press of a
button, or a short keyboard sequence, a

user can instantly flip between
one machine and another
and access all devices from
the workstation on their own
desk. With no perceivable
transmission latency or image
degradation, performance is
so good that users don't even
realise the hardware they are
accessing is hundreds of metres
away.
As
more
IP-connected
technology is implemented into
the broadcast chain, there will
be a need to access and manage virtual
machines over an IP network. Ideally, this
process will be incorporated into the current
setup, so that users remain unaware of the
physical location of the actual device and

whether they are working on a real or virtual
machine.

to be accessed alongside other real machines
already connected to a Draco tera KVM
switch. Communication is via RDP (Remote
Desktop Protocol). In addition, secure
shell sessions (SSH) can also be operated
from the user workstation to enable device
management and network control. Computer
remote access via VNC protocol is also
possible. Further devices will be launched by
IHSE in the near future to provide additional
services and enhanced IP connectivity.
New ways of thinking will be required
as the broadcast workflow
becomes more IP-focused and
an increasing amount of content
is handled in the cloud. Physical
interfaces are being replaced by
IP transmission and connectivity.
Broadcast engineers are working
hard to figure out how to
implement new IP techniques
and technologies and a common
approach
is
to
introduce
piecemeal solutions and integrate
them into existing architectures,
taking advantage of the benefits
those IP solutions bring. A KVM switch
coupled to a Remote IP CPU is an ideal way
of combining these two technologies.

production houses can locally and remotely
monitor streams from satellites, camera
feeds, playout devices, and many other

featuring Cinegy in a specially arranged
theatre for technology and application
presentations throughout the show.
