Delivering the Future of Broadcast and
OTT with High-Quality Experiences
The future of broadcast and OTT is all about quality, says Anant Khanolkar,
Channel Sales, Verizon Digital Media Services...

C

onsumers will accept nothing less than
fast, secure, TV-like quality on every
device. And to meet consumer expectations
for
high-quality
viewer
experiences,
broadcasters and content owners will need
a fully integrated platform that manages the
entire OTT video delivery workflow.

One-of-a-kind package
Verizon Digital Media Services' awardwinning platform is the only OTT solution
that includes an advanced video streaming
service (Uplynk), a globally connected cloud
CDN (Edgecast) and world-class monitoring
and compliance services (Volicon).
This one-of-a-kind live, linear and ondemand video delivery package enables
broadcasters and content owners to deliver
high-quality streams that are fast, secure
and scalable, for truly flawless viewer
experiences.
VDMS' Volicon Media Intelligence service
is the industry's leading quality measurement

technology, which is vital for monitoring
and delivering quality of experience
and quality of service, on every device.
Volicon's Monitor application allows you
to monitor the quality of broadcast feeds
and streams, report faults and instantly
review the impact of detected errors for
true end-to-end visibility.
In addition, a major feature of Volicon's
Monitor application is Path Monitoring for
OTT services, which allows simultaneous
monitoring, logging and recording of the
baseband or transport stream broadcast
contribution feeds, as well as one or more
post-CDN HLS renditions for historical review
and comparison of content all in the same
interface.
Volicon Media Intelligence service makes
continuous monitoring of the entire OTT
delivery system easy, allowing broadcasters
and content owners to quickly identify
and resolve any issues before they impact
viewers, increasing the quality of experience.

VDMS delivers a fully integrated platform

Viewer experience
Quality of Experience is an essential
measurement for broadcast and OTT
because it looks at the video signals from the
consumer viewpoint, providing insight into
the viewer experience.
If faults are detected, the Volicon Media
Intelligence service captures and stores
the stream both before and after each
fault to support root-cause analysis and
troubleshooting. And the new Volicon
Transport Stream Analysis tools perform
detailed industry-standard checks on the

structure and validity of the broadcast
contribution transport streams before OTT
encoding and packaging, ensuring the
integrity and quality of the feeds throughout
the OTT delivery chain.
Finally, monitoring is performed at the
network edge using a virtual player instance
to verify the performance of local delivery
networks, ensure that encrypted content is
delivered to authorised viewers and correct
decryption keys are provided.
Broadcast and OTT can be a complex
ecosystem full of disparate workflows,
fragmented supply chains and multiple
points of failure. But it doesn't have to be.
Now broadcasters and content providers can
deliver the future of broadcast and OTT at
scale with a single, unified platform covering
every inch of the OTT delivery workflow.
With VDMS' next-generation platform, you
can build and engage audiences easily and
efficiently with high-quality linear, live and ondemand experiences, on every device.

Five Things to Think About When
Choosing a DRM Solution
Delivering a compelling video experience on multiple platforms in the face
of rapidly shifting customer demands is complex, says Chem Assayag,
EVP Marketing & Sales at Viaccess-Orca...

Y

et, doing it securely is even more difficult.
Here are five key things to think about
when selecting a modern DRM solution.
1. The first matter to consider is the value
of your content. There is a direct correlation
between the value of content and the amount
of piracy it is subject to. People will pay a
premium for content that is in high demand,
such as live sports, first run screenings
of high-profile episodic dramas, and new
movies. Content that is technically advanced,
such as 4K, is also more valuable. Premium
content is targeted far more regularly by
pirates and, as a result, rights owners
have learned to demand tough security
requirements from operators.
2. Another consideration is devices. In the
modern broadcast environment, you have to
assume that your viewers will be watching

on a range of devices, from the connected
TV through the set-top box, if applicable, and
on to the PC, tablet, and smartphone. Each
platform has its own application language,
methodology, and native DRM security. This
is precisely why a multi-DRM approach
is crucial as it supports as wide a range of
devices and formats as possible, as well as
offering integration with third-party DRM
solutions such as Microsoft PlayReady and
protection in case of failure. The goal should
always be best-in-class protection based on
device type.
3. The ideal DRM solution depends on
whether you leverage unicast, multicast or
broadcast networks - managed or not. It's
a situation with plenty of flexibility and may
evolve as your content delivery network
advances. Leveraging adaptive streaming

protocols such as MPEG-DASH, Microsoft
Smooth Streaming, and HLS is vital to
maintain optimal video quality under a range
of network conditions and on any device
type.
4. The DRM solution you choose and the
way you implement it are all part of any
over-arching content licensing agreements
you may sign. That means it is more than
just the DRM you are selecting, but also
the method of implementation, the level
of security around the integration, and
how security management will be handled
over time. Integration can be fast, and you
need a solution that ensures a seamless
deployment.
5. Finally, integrating a DRM within an STB
or a secure player for Android on a Trusted
Execution Environment (TEE) is a complex

task. However, it can be done with an
impressive swiftness and there are plenty of
options to ensure the revenue assurance you
seek can be provided at relatively low cost.
