Driving Technological Changes
Mr. Iswaran said it was
an "exciting time" to be in Asia, particularly in
Southeast Asia which he said was one of the
fastest growing regions in the world.
In fact, over the last decade, the region has
experienced an average annual growth rate of
6%, with this trajectory expected to continue
until the end of the decade and beyond.
Home to 630 million people, half of Southeast
Asia's population is under the age of 30 and
are actively contributing to the "remarkable
growth" the region is experiencing, said
Mr. Iswaran. Singapore is at the heart of
this growth and development, with the
region "well positioned to benefit from the
opportunities," he said.
One particular mention in the opening
ceremony came in the form of the gaming
industry. Mr. Gandhi revealed that the sector
has experienced significant growth in the
region and this demand has been reflected
with the inclusion of the first ever live esports
tournament at ConnecTechAsia.
The Southeast Asia League (SEAL) is
located in the new Esports Arena Studio
(Level 6, Suntec Singapore) and is being held
in collaboration with WeOne, the Blockchainbased esports tournament. Taking place

tournament and the blockchain technology
that forms the core of the game.
Another highlight is located in Basement
2, added Mr. Gandhi, which has been
transformed into a "playground for a taster of
the smart city of the future". Here, attendees
are invited to test drive the Hyundai IONIQ
electric car - a zero-emission, all-electric car.
The vehicle also harnesses smart technology,
such as AI, as it embraces the future of
mobility.
With the advent of such disruptive
technologies, Mr. Iswaran concluded that
it has not only "revolutionised the global
economy, changed industries, altered
business models and transformed regional
growth, [but] it is also creating possibilities
for our people, our businesses and our
economies."
"The challenge for all of us is how
we navigate this dynamic and evolving
landscape, so that we are able to achieve
growth and achieve mutual benefit," he said.

estimated 100 participants from the region
were anticipated at the games.

Attendees will also gain access to expert

game in esports, and gain a better

understanding of the role of technology in
esports, via keynote addresses and panel
sessions.
The popularity of esports has exploded
in recent years, with Southeast Asia as the
industry's fastest-growing region. With more
than 9.5 million esports enthusiasts in the
region, this number is expected to double
by 2019. Esports is also set to become a
competitive sport at the 2022 Asian Games,
bringing even greater potential and
collaboration to the industry.
