KVM in the Broadcast Workflow
The Draco tera enterprise
range supports HD
video signals

Terence Teng, Managing Director of IHSE APAC, discusses how a keyboard,
video, mouse (KVM) streamlines the broadcast workflow...

I

n today's fast-paced broadcast environment,
the ability to instantly access essential
broadcast equipment is crucial to every great
transmission. KVM switching technology has
been used in broadcast operations for many
years. Its role is to provide production staff,
sound engineers, vision mixers and other
operators with instant access to broadcast
devices from their own workstation, without
requiring them to move to another location or
use a dedicated terminal.
KVM switches provide unrestricted access
to all broadcast devices. To the operator, it is
as though all equipment is local to them: they
can operate whichever device they need and
switch to others with the press of a button, or
simple keyboard command.
In addition to the ergonomic advantages of
instant access to broadcast devices, there
are other valuable benefits. For example:

removing noisy, heat-generating computer
hardware from the operator work area creates
a better, quieter and less-cluttered working
environment; equipment can be shared and
allocated as needed, rather than providing
each operator with expensive sets of highpower computing equipment and software
licences; workspaces and editing suites do
not have to be assigned to a specific role,
giving greater flexibility and savings in high
real-estate costs, and allowing studios and
OB vehicles to address a wider range of
projects; and locating hardware in a central,
secure, environmentally-controlled room
increases security against unauthorised
access, prolongs its lifetime and allows
more manageable maintenance and upgrade
procedures to be carried out.
KVM switches and extenders can operate
over long distances - up to 140 metres with

copper cabling or multi-mode fibre and up to
10km with single mode fibre. Any building,
broadcast complex or outside broadcast
truck can be equipped with a single switch
connected to all computers in a central
computer area. In addition, multiple switches
can be connected together in a grid layout to
create local networks in individual buildings
with interconnection to other networks for
maximum operational efficiency.
IHSE KVM switches are available in fixedformat configurations and modular systems,
allowing any size matrix to be deployed.
The technology has been developed to
meet the high-performance and demanding
requirements of today's broadcast industry.
These include: instant connection and
switching - no delay to operators when
changing applications; HD-SDI and USB 3.0
parallel switching - multiple data streams can

be switched together; integration with thirdparty controllers - allowing greater control
of the full system; near-zero transmission
latency - critical in the broadcast workflow;
artefact-free video and audio - so that the
full picture is seen; support for all digital and
audio video formats - allowing any signal
to be handled; extensive redundancy and
security options - contributing to 24/7, highlyreliable, operation. IHSE is exhibiting at booth
6F3-01.

Riedel's Teatime Tech Talk

F

Cameron O'Neill

or the third consecutive year, Riedel is
again hosting a panel discussion at its
stand, with its Teatime Tech Talk taking place
tomorrow (Wednesday, June 27) at 3:30pm
on booth 4J4-01.
Open to attendees, the session gathers
industry veterans to discuss the latest
technology developments making an impact
on broadcasters.
Riedel APAC Director Cameron O'Neill is
moderating the discussion with a focus on

the progression of IP as well as its adoption,
implementation issues, and real opportunities
moving forward.
"Every year we look forward to hosting
BroadcastAsia attendees at our stand,
whether for our Teatime Tech Talks, which
are always standing room only, or for
demonstrations of our latest innovations in
real-time signal distribution and networking,"
said Cameron O'Neill, Director, Riedel
Asia-Pacific.

"This year we're especially excited about
the new standalone version of Bolero, which
offers a perfect wireless intercom solution
for rental houses, clients with smaller
requirements, and clients who are already
invested in other intercom solutions. Plus,
our new 1200 series SmartPanel represents
a quantum leap forward in workflow flexibility,
power, and connectivity."
