It's easy to see why
this place comes from
award-winning stock.
Having recently opened in one
of London's most sought-after
locations, The Coal Shed is aiming
to replicate its sister restaurant's
accolade of the best restaurant
to eat in the UK (Observer Food
Monthly awards).
While The Coal Shed Brighton
prides itself on its seafood as well
as steak, its London namesake
boasts a range of 35-day, dry-aged
Scottish steaks expertly cooked
over hot coals. And that's what
makes up its Sharing Roast.
At first, knowing my meat-loving
husband, I worried there wouldn't
be enough for us to share... how
wrong I was. On a huge platter,
our very knowledgeable waitress
Hannah brought out 600g of black
Aberdeen Angus, 35-day, dry-aged
roast sirloin of beef, cooked (and
sliced) to perfection - medium
rare. We dived in. My husband
took the brunt, which I expected,
but my frustration
was short-lived as
the rest appeared.
The roasties,
made with beef fat,
are some of the best I've
ever tasted. Crispy and fluffy,
I demolished them! I enjoyed the
sides, too - the cauliflower cheese
was the right side of creamy. Huge
Yorkshire puddings were another
highlight, they took over our plates!
But the most intriguing addition
was purple carrots. Roasted with
beetroot and honey glazed, they
came with a sprinkling of what I
thought was brown sugar on top.
Turns out it was beef sourdough
crumb. Just wow! Creamed cabbage
gave us our green goodness but
the smoky gravy was the icing on a
very meaty (and satisfying) cake.

This north-west London gem
is visually stunning. Think
marble and walnut interiors
- the food is fantastic, too.
Known for its modern
Lebanese cuisine, my starter
choice had to be a selection of
hot and cold mezzes - which
were very tasty. For the main,
I opted for roast chicken, my
husband had the lamb, and
both had been marinated in
rosemary, thyme, garlic and
mixed spices. Soft and tender,
you could tell the meats were
of high quality, served with
a cinnamon gravy.
Accompanying roast
vegetables included sweet
potatoes, parsnip and carrots,
and roasties that were fluffy
on the inside and crispy on
the out - perfect. We then
squeezed in baked vermicelli.
The food, service and style
were excellent and means we
can't wait to return.
