The Lord

Recently refurbished, the
Lord Palmerston is plush with
attractive décor - an ideal
setting for a Sunday roast.
My partner chose the Lord
Palmerston Roast, which
includes sirloin of beef, ¼
chicken and pork loin - what
a treat! The beef in particular
was extremely succulent.
All of the roasts on the
menu (as well as this one,
there's beef, roast chicken,
pork loin and veggie pithivier)
came with crispy goose fat
roast potatoes, buttery double
egg Yorkshire puddings,
parsnip purée, roast heritage
carrots, Brussels tops and
tangy apple gravy.
I opted for the vegetarian
roast - which many pubs
struggle to pull off - but the
chestnut mushroom pithivier
proved delicious.
A crispy and moreish
vegetarian puff pastry pie, it
was a hearty, seasonal main
dish, thanks to its sweet
chestnut taste.

ROAST
The tradition
of Sunday
roasts came
about in
King Henry
VII's reign in
1485, when
his royal
guards would
dine on roast
beef every
Sunday after
church. The
population
then copied
by dropping
off their beef
at the local
bakers on
their way to
church to
be roasted
until they
returned.
On a drizzly Sunday
afternoon, finding a warm
pub that serves a traditional
roast can be difficult in central
London. Step forward the
Woodins Shade, and although
part of a chain, it's anything
but boring.
The traditional dining room
upstairs has unique character
and is decorated with images
from the area's historical past
(the pub has been serving
local market traders from
nearby spitalfields for years).
Although the specialty menu
is sausages, I was only here
for one thing - the hearty
Sunday roast.
With the wind blowing a
gale outside, I started with
soup of the day - winter
vegetable served with
artisan sour dough.
The best

to find a good veggie roast,

made the cut.
My friend tried the honeyglazed ham hock - quite a
change to the usual roast
offerings. It was juicy
and fell off the bone.
Both roasts were served
with generous helpings of
parsnips, carrots, cauliflower
cheese, roast potatoes and,
of course, a great big
Yorkshire pud. I'm happy to
say I also enjoyed an extra
portion of cauliflower cheese
and second helpings of gravy!
Wishing I'd saved more
room, but not to be defeated,
I ordered the salted caramel
profiteroles and my friend
chose sticky toffee pudding.
What a great end to the meal.
