While we're on the
subject of what to do
in Amsterdam, let's
firstly deal with the
elephant in the room.
The Red Light District is
actually one of the safest parts
of the city to visit, especially at
night, and well worth a look
around if you have the time and
curiosity! What few notice is that
the Rosse Buurt (Dutch for 'pink'
or 'red' neighbourhood) is in
fact one of the oldest and most
beautiful parts of the city with its
long winding narrow streets and
charming buildings.
If it's throbbing nightlife you
want, head to The Rembrandtplein
and Leidseplein (amsterdam.info)
- two busy squares of bars,
restaurants, pubs and clubs.
Whether you're involved with a

drunken horde of stags, having
a city break with the missus or
simply lone-wolfing it, you can
find places here to both satisfy
and entertain.
If the hard, pulsating beats of
Eurodance aren't your cup of
Heineken, there are numerous
street cafés from where you can
relax and watch the always
entertaining street performers.
The city in its entirety can
easily be explored on foot, trams,
or bicycles - two wheels being
the locals' preferred way of
getting around.
Amsterdam doesn't exactly
lack water either, and the canal
rings provide an inviting and
charming way to view or traverse
the city. You can even hire your
own private boat. Wait until
dusk for that extra-special
romantic opportunity.

cloud Nine

The famous 'Nine
Streets' are, well,
nine streets consisting
of trendy boutiques, fashion
outlets, beauty salons and
restaurants. Quirky, cobbled
and quaint, this area is a
must for anyone lusting for
retail therapy. Or even just a
bit of atmospheric browsing.
There are great cafés, bars
and galleries to enjoy, too.
