RETRO CITY ◆

THE TOWN IS
A MECCA FOR
LOVERS OF ALL
T H I N G S V I N TA G E

curious, teeny tiny
eatery for seafood
lovers; razor clams,
squid and scallops from
Rye Bay are normally
on the menu.
Turner Contemporary
also hosts dinners on
Friday and Saturdays.
Finally, for a refined
Indian dinner, The
Ambrette is top choice
among the locals.

Once I'm
there, what's
the transport
links like?

Margate is small
and contained, so
everywhere is within
walking distance.
The old town is the
most popular place to
base yourself, but don't

forget to walk slightly
out of the old town to
Cliftonville, where
there are a row of
trendy shops including
Haeckels skincare
store, with products
made using locally
foraged ingredients
and seaweed. There's
a treatment room, or
treat yourself to the
beautifully packaged
natural products.
Next door is the
gallery/shop Plinth,
which showcases local
artists and quirky gifts.
Walk over to
Northdown Road to
find some quirky gems
including Batchelors

Patisserie, Clayspace
(book in for a pottery
class) and Transmission,
a vinyl junkie's paradise.
The road still has a
typical town feeling
and is very much in
development, but with
an organic produce shop
called The Grain Grocer
setting up shop, it's not
far off becoming hip
and is worth a visit.

Any souvenirs
to bring back?

No visit to the seaside
is complete without
buying a stick of rock.
Dog lovers will want to
get a bargain made-tomeasure coat for their
pooch at Doggie Apparal
on the Old Town Square.
The town is a mecca
for vintage lovers.
Madame Popoff is
a treasure trove of
clothes, bags and shoes
from the 20s onwards.
Handsome Freak is the

new kid on the block,
for original Levi's and
Converse trainers.
Pick up great vintage
homewares at Margate
Retro, Junk Deluxe and
Showtime Retro.

What else is
there to do?

From Margate along
to Botany Bay then Joss
Bay (where there are
beautiful sandy coves)
it's an uninterrupted
walk or cycle (you can
hire bikes along the
main beach).
Tudor House in The
Old Town is an eerie
16th century building,
the oldest in Margate,
which was carefully
restored in the 50s.
There's Margate
Museum in the Old
Town Square, and the
Shell Grotto (its
interior is made from
4.6 million shells) is a
total mystery! 
