Just cruisin'

Sir Francis Drake set sail from St
Michael's Island, later Drake's Island,
in 1577, returning three years later
having circumnavigated the globe.
You can see this tiny outcrop,
with derelict military barracks and
buildings from the Napoleonic era,
on board a cruiser with commentary.
It takes you past Plymouth Hoe,
with the iconic Smeaton's Tower
lighthouse, to a tour through western
Europe's largest Naval dockyard,
with current warships and nuclear
submarines. Tickets cost £8.50 for
adults, £5 for kids.

Plymouth Coach Station
on Armada Way, right in
the heart of the city.

and will be closer to the
city's main attractions and

A real tonic

If you are craving a snifter after all that
culture and exercise, head for the
Black Friars Distillery, the home
of Plymouth Gin since 1793. The
oldest working gin distillery in Britain,
the refectory in the building dates back
to 1431 and is said to be where the Pilgrim
Fathers spent their last night before
setting sail in the Mayflower. Take a guided
tour to find out more about this ancient
drink, still enjoyed in its purest form
today, and have a tipple in the cocktail bar.
