Whether or not you're fanatic
about racing, the international
racecourse in Iffezheim, a small
village near the spa town of
Baden-Baden, is well worth a
visit, with the final of three big
festival races, the Sales & Racing
Festival, taking place during 21-23
October 2016. Expect glamour,
nail-biting suspense and crazy
hats, with competitors from all
over the world.
If that's not your thing, there's
the Rhythm & Blues series of
events, with dates ongoing until
1 December 2016. Ralf Heinrich,
art director and drummer of the
band The Voyagers, invites solo
artists to play different concerts,
making each one unique.
As well as the gee-gees and
blues, there's so much to see in
this stunning area situated in the
Black Forest, with mountains,
lakes and forests to explore, and

Roman baths, cathedrals and
fascinating ruins.

Zaragoza, Spain

Get into the heart of this historical
Spanish city, capital of the north
eastern Aragon region, by joining
in with the dramatic Fiestas del
Pilar on 12 October 2016.
Honouring the patroness 'Virgin
of the Pillar', there are fireworks,
traditional music food and parades.
Thousands of people - one year
there were 400,000 - process in
traditional costume to the Plaza
del Pilar carrying trails of roses,
lilies, orchids and gladioli. These
are then placed on an enormous
mantle as an offering to the
Virgin. A spectacle well worth
seeing, but book accommodation
in advance as this is one event
many Spaniards flock to see.

For film buffs after something
different, the 34th Golden Rose
Feature Film Festival held this
September (19-25) in the
Bulgarian town, is well worth a
visit. There's a huge selection of
feature films, documentaries,
science fiction and animated films
to lose yourself in.
A selected jury awards prizes for
the best film on a contemporary
subject, including best screenplay,
director, cameraman, actress and
actor, so you'll be seeing the best
of the Bulgarian industry, with
most films in English. Varna is an
interesting place to get to know
too, with beautiful countryside, a
long sandy beach stretching for
miles and an 8km park, said to be
the largest of its kind in Europe.

Dubbed the Rome of France, this
pretty city in the south is full of
artefacts including the Maison
Carrée, said to be one of the best
preserved Roman temples.
