Extreme ironing - yes, it is a
thing - was apparently started
by Leicester man Phil Shaw who
needed to iron but preferred rock
climbing - so decided to combine
the two. Seems reasonable. That
was in 1997 and since then, the
sport has really taken off.
Top ironing spots include Everest
Base Camp, underwater (72 divers
broke the world record for number
of people ironing underwater at
once), ironing while surfboarding
and ironing on a closed section of
the M1. The iron must be hot, too
(which must be tricky underwater).

A GRAVY KIND
OF LOVE

GRAVY TRAINING
Wrestling in gravy... now that
really must be the weirdest
competition in the world. A relative
newcomer in the wacky sports
stakes, this year's Gravy Wrestling
Championships hosted at the Rose
N Bowl, Stacksteads, Lancashire,
was the eighth one which came
about as a publicity wheeze for a
short-lived food festival.

The festival is long gone but the
wrestling is more popular than ever,
attracting competitors from as far
away as Austria and Australia. Prizes
can be won for the best costume,
and wrestling talent is less important
than making the audience laugh.
Winners are decided by audience
response so the key, more than
sporting prowess, is to entertain.
The pool is specially constructed
and topped up, not with gravy as
this apparently attracted wasps,
but with 1,500 litres of brown liquid
made in a nearby black pudding
factory. After each round, the
contestants are hosed down by the
Lancashire fire brigade.
Catch this bizarre event on August
Bank Holiday Mondays. The cost is
£2 on the door, with proceeds going
to East Lancashire Hospice.
