ROAD RUNNERS
Keeping a huge fleet of coaches
on the move is no mean feat.
With the best will in the world,
there are going to be occasional
breakdowns, accidents or
stranded customers - and
that is when the National
Express Network Control Centre
(NCC) team comes into its own.
Based at Birmingham coach
station, the 25-strong team
looks after 1,800 services a day
(which is around 600 vehicles),
liaising with 35 partner
operators, drivers and stations
to ensure services run smoothly
around the clock.

STEALING
TOP SPOT
The 1967 crime
caper Bonnie
and Clyde is the
best road movie
according to a
poll of 2,000
Brits, followed
by Easy Rider
and Planes,
Trains and
Automobiles.

The NCC receives around
400 calls a day from sites,
drivers and operators
(increasing to more than
1,000 at busy times) and its
day and night teams aim to
keep the operation going 24
hours a day, 365 days a year.
Team members manage
any operational incident that
has the potential to cause
disruption, from scheduled
roadworks to major incidents
on motorways or in the cities.
The most frequent type of
disruptions involve motorways
and the NCC works very closely
with the police and Highways
England to keep up-to-date
with the network's condition.
Using the latest GPS
technology, the team can, after
discovering where there are
potential problems, reroute
drivers before they are delayed.
