restaurant is still a big hit
with locals and tourists alike.
Founded in 1871, it offers
takeaways as well as two
floors of cosy seating. Not
only does the vinegary smell
that surrounds the building
tempt you in, but the staff
are welcoming, too.
Boasting sustainable fish
all year round, from cod and
haddock to skate, rock, lemon
sole and king prawns, you
might struggle to choose.
Eduardo, the restaurant's
manager, recommended
Mum's Potato Salad (boiled
new potatoes in a vinaigrette
with red onion and fresh
mint) before surprising my
husband and I by suggesting a
Spanish cider to complement
our fish and chips.
We plumped for cod and
haddock. The meaty white
flesh in both fell off our forks
and the batter they were
encased in was just how we
like it - light and golden with
minimal bubbles (the 145year-old recipe is a secret).

Don't let the name fool you
- this place is pure class. Décor,
service, ambience and, most
importantly, food, it's all a cut
above the traditional chippy.
Anyone expecting cod wrapped
in greasy paper will be pleasantly
surprised. However, this is strictly
a restaurant, not a takeaway.
Instead of cod, battered sausage
and all the other things associated
with traditional fish and chip shops,
Trawler Trash offers alternatives
you might not have tried before.
They're championing the
underdog. Or, underfish, as it were.
So cod and chips has been replaced
with Toast Beer-Battered Coley and
chips, crushed peas and tartare.
Coley has more flavour than cod,
while those crushed peas kick
their mushy brethren into the sea.
To start, the Air-Dried Charred
Octopus served with green
tomatoes and chilli is a delightful
smoky treat that will give your
dining companion food envy.
