BUILT IN 70BC, POMPEII'S
AMPHITHEATRE IS THE
WORLD'S OLDEST

T

ravelling with a teenager
can be tough: they're not
young enough to cajole
into following your will,
yet they're not old enough to set
the agenda. Instead, you need to
generate ideas to maintain their
interest while keeping the eyerolling to a minimum.
One way to counter the
scepticism is to plan your holiday
around their interests - and if
history or mythology sparks their
imagination, then Pompeii in
Italy is an excellent destination.
This was the reasoning that
led me to take my 15-year-old
brother Matthew there for a
long weekend earlier this year.
FROZEN IN TIME
Every schoolchild learns about
the town destroyed by Vesuvius'
mighty eruption in 79AD, either
in history lessons or - more
excitingly - during science
classes that demonstrate the
power of volcanoes in miniature.
It's a civilization frozen in time
by volcanic ash, the bodies of

74

its residents preserved so well
that you can make out faces and
clothing after nearly 2,000 years.
It's a bloodless reminder that
society is often rendered helpless
by nature. And it's a fascinating
place for adults and teens alike
to compare modern Italy with
its ancient past.
The closest airport is in Naples
and the journey can be under
three hours from the UK. Prices
inevitably rise in the holidays
- our return flights out of
Stansted were £350 for both of
us during Easter, almost double
what we'd pay off-peak.
Naples is a vibrant, dirty and
hectic city that contrasts with
the grandiose bay around it.
There are plenty of sights - the
Castel Nuovo and the Duomo
cathedral are two masterpieces
- but because graffiti and litter
are commonplace and the
narrow streets are so confusing
(I didn't want to risk getting lost
at night), we stayed at the Hotel
Poseidon in Torre del Greco,
between Naples and Pompeii.

Take sun
cream and
a hat if
it's hot, or
waterproofs
if rain is
forecast, as
Pompeii is
largely
open air.
Don't
forget your
water
bottle - the
ancient
site has a
small café,
but there
are water
fountains
to quench
your thirst.

GIVE YOURSELF
A FULL DAY TO
SEE THE CITY

I chose this spot to reduce the
time we'd spend travelling to the
ruins but, unfortunately, while
our hotel had a doorstep metro
station, Pompeii is on a different
line - the Circumvesuviana - a
20-minute walk uphill. Although
teenagers are perfectly capable
of walking, choose your location
carefully to minimise moaning!
On a more positive note, bright
sunshine welcomed us to Italy, so
we were able to climb the 1,281m
tall Mount Vesuvius. Most of the
slopes are in a national park,
but to reach the crater it's €10
(€8 concessions) for entry.
