FEELING OF ALL
on every mouthful, the explosion of
tastes and flavours, the breeze in my
hair, the sound of the wind rustling
through the palms and the beads of
sweat running down my spine.
As I'm surrounded by couples who
aren't saying anything; sitting opposite
each other in painful silence, it makes
me feel sad for them. Being with
someone when your connection has
broken and you have nothing left to
say to one another must be the loneliest
feeling of all.
ROMANTIC MOMENTS
Holidaying solo is very different in my
40s to in my 20s or even 30s. The groups
of young backpackers eye me with

interest, rather than inclusion. I come
across the odd single traveller (we
nod in acknowledgment), then there
are the couples, most of whom seem
to find me odd, and give me a wide
berth. It's as if being alone may be
contagious, or I might be out to snatch
their boyfriends as I couldn't possibly be
happy on my own.
I spent my two weeks as the mood
took me. Days on the beach, a weekend
in the city of Mérida, dancing on the
beach until the early hours, or climbing
into bed with a book at 8pm. There is
something truly invigorating about doing
whatever you want, without consultation
or any real consideration.
It has been a challenge at times
- but because of my pidgin Spanish
rather than the fact I haven't got a
hand to hold. There have been romantic
moments, such as watching the sun
rise over the white sands and turquoise
sea, and sipping cocktails under fairy
lights in the jungle, but these moments
haven't been diminished because
I have experienced them alone... in
fact, maybe they have been more
intense, more pure, as I haven't had
to share them.
The reason I came away on my own
is because I needed to. I've dined alone,
drunk cocktails alone, gone to bed alone
and, yes, woken up alone. But I haven't
once felt lonely. At the end of my
me-moon, I know myself better, and the
geographical distance I've given myself
has also given me the headspace I needed.
I feel relaxed, positive, confident and
peaceful. Heck, maybe even brave. 
