Begin the day with a gentle walk
through the enormous public
Englischer Garten, which dates
from 1789. At 417 hectares, it
is bigger than London's Hyde
Park and an infamous nude
sunbathing hotspot.
An unusual attraction is the
wetsuit-clad surfers who can be
seen tumbling over a standing
wave in the small, man-made
River Eisbach all year round.
Sate your appetite in the beer
garden Chinesischer Turm. The
roast chicken stall is particularly
good and if you're lucky, there
may be a brass band playing.
AFTERNOON
With your time in Munich
drawing to a close, finish off with
some culture by visiting one of
its many galleries and museums.
Haus der Kunst (the House of
Art, entry €14, hausderkunst.de/
en) on the southern edge of the
Englischer Garten is a centre for
contemporary art, despite being
an early architectural example of
Nazi propaganda.
Otherwise, the Pinakotheken
(pinakothek.de/en) is a trio of
galleries that cater for pretty
much every taste - the Alte
Pinakothek shows Old Masters
and works from the Middle Ages
to the 18th century; the Neue
Pinakothek focuses on the 19th
century while the Pinakothek
der Moderne is dedicated to
20th and 21st century art, design
and architecture. A day pass
to all three (€12) also permits
entry to Museum Brandhorst and
the Sammlung Schack.

Glimpse a more frivolous period
of Bavaria's history during a visit
to this glorious palace (€8.50)
commissioned by King Ludwig
II, whose multiple castle building
projects nearly bankrupted the
state back in the 19th century.
The monarch wanted a mini
version of Versailles in France,
and a Byzantine palace, but the
end result was an expanded royal
hunting lodge and parkland, with
a grotto themed after the opera
Tannhäuser by Richard Wagner
- another of the king's obsessions.
Linderhof was the only palace
completed before Ludwig's death

75 years since the first prisoners
were taken to its gas chambers.
