Zest Harbourside's 'snacking menu' in Whitehaven focuses on affordable
local produce - but not as you might expect. How about quirky version of
KFC? It, too, is presented in a bucket, but this one is packed to the brim
with golden-brown fillets coated in crunchy, Southern-style seasoning. The
homemade garlic mayo and barbecue sauce make the pieces irresistible.

A fixture of Manchester's bohemian
Northern Quarter, TNQ offers
an elegant alternative to the
surrounding burger and burrito
joints. Head chef Anthony Fielden's
take on modern British cuisine is
underpinned by locally sourced
ingredients and big, bold flavours.
TNQ's seafood really hits the
mark. Pan-fried hake and halibut

are stars of the à la carte menu,
even though the confit duck legs
or slow-cooked belly pork arguably
steal the show.
The express lunch, hearty
Sunday roasts, Happy Mondays
and Thirsty Thursdays (set menus
with unlimited wine) provide bang
for your buck but be sure to leave
room for an exquisite crème brûlée.

This Leeds city centre
restaurant's taken the
'outside in' trend to its
extreme. It recreates a Thai
street scene for diners,
with garish signs, colourful
corrugated iron sheets,
mismatched lanterns and
lots of noisy patrons. You
may even be seated at a
table resembling a tuk-tuk
(motor rickshaw)!
Zaap's popularity and
chaotic decor can make
finding a seat unexpectedly
challenging - but it is so
popular the owners have
opened up in Nottingham
and Newcastle, too.
Rice, noodles, roast
meats and soup dishes are
generously portioned and
the starters and mains
are served at once. Perfectly
flavoured dim sum are a
great sharing option, or try
crispy belly pork with stirfried morning glory (water
spinach) and a spicy papaya
salad - followed by a Thai
beer or a glass of bubble tea
to temper the heat.
