GO SAILING IN THE
LAKE DISTRICT

(1884-1967)
It's been 50 years
since children's writer
Arthur Ransome - who
launched a million sailing
dreams with his wholesome
Swallows and Amazons
book series - died aged 83.
Pay your respects by
visiting the Lake District: as
a boy Arthur holidayed near
Coniston, where he based
the first book, and went to
school in Windermere.
The Arthur Ransome
Society encourages visitors
to go sailing, walking
and fishing, or see the
author's desk, typewriter,
pipes, books and general
memorabilia inside the
Museum of Lakeland Life
and Industry in Kendal.
Alternatively, you could
recreate his many voyages
on the Norfolk Broads lakes
and rivers, or head to the
Arthur Ransome Festival in
Suffolk later in the year.

IN HIS
WORDS
'You write not for
children but for
yourself. And, if
by good fortune
children enjoy
what you enjoy,
then you are
a writer of
children's books.'
(Arthur Ransome)
'Who would wave a
flag to be rescued
if they had a desert
island of their
own? That was the
thing that spoilt
Robinson Crusoe.
In the end he
came home.'
(Arthur Ransome)
'They found, like
many explorers
before them, that
somehow, in their
absence, they had
got into trouble
at home.'
(Swallowdale)

John Milton's
Paradise Lost

(1667)
The first version of this
epic poem in blank verse by 17thcentury English poet John Milton
(1608-74) was published 350 years
ago. It has more than 10,000 lines
on the Biblical story of Adam and
Eve's temptation and expulsion
from the Garden of Eden and is
considered his major work.
Paradise Lost has inspired other
eminent writers and artists, from
Blake to the Brontë sisters, Mary
Shelley to Salvador Dali, James
Joyce to George Lucas.
His only surviving residence is
a 16th-century cottage in south
east Buckinghamshire, where he
completed his masterpiece and
was inspired to write its sequel,
Paradise Regained. Today, Milton's
Cottage is a museum filled with rare
books, paintings and prints.

IN HIS
WORDS
'The mind is its
own place, and in
itself can make a
heav'n of hell,
a hell of heav'n.'
(Paradise Lost)
'Long is the way
and hard, that
out of Hell leads
up to light.'
(Paradise Lost)
'Never can true
reconcilement
grow, where
wounds of deadly
hate have pierced
so deep...'
(Paradise Lost)
