TRY AN OMELETTE
ARNOLD BENNETT
AT THE SAVOY

Arnold
Bennett

(1867-1931)
Best-known as the
author of the Clayhanger
books and The Old Wives'
Tale, Arnold Bennett, born
150 years ago this year,
was also an accomplished
journalist, non-fiction writer
and playwright. His enduring
fame is as a chronicler
of Stoke and its nearby
Potteries towns, the setting
and inspiration of some of
his most famous works and
where he grew up. Oh
- and the fact that he has an
omelette named after him.
The Potteries Museum
and Art Gallery, in Bethesda
Street, Stoke-on-Trent is
holding a special exhibition
- Arnold Bennett: In Life
and Art - until 2
July. Dipping into
the museum's
collections
of Arnold's
artworks,
possessions,
documents
photographs and
more, the exhibition
paints a picture of the man's
life and times. Many items
have never previously been
on display. There will also
be new theatre adaptations
of his novels, talks and the
chance to follow the Bursley
Trail to see some of the places
mentioned in his books.
And the omelette? It seems
that while the author was
staying at London's Savoy
Hotel writing his final novel,

Imperial Palace,
the chefs perfected
a version flavoured with
smoked haddock, Parmesan
cheese and cream, which
pleased Arnold so much he
insisted on it being prepared
wherever he travelled.
It was named the Omelette
Arnold Bennett - and the
Savoy Grill, proud of its
achievement, has the dish
on its menu to this day.
