Although Sir Arthur
Conan Doyle began
writing about his
canny detective some
years earlier, the first
collection of stories
- The Adventures of
Sherlock Holmes - was
published in 1892.
It was an immediate
hit and has, over the
following 125 years,
sold more than 60
million copies. Not
surprising, really, as it
contains some of the
best Holmes stories
including The Speckled
Band and The RedHeaded League.
Mark the anniversary

You may not realise
these popular English sayings
on the right were written
by Tennyson, who died 125
years ago this year.
He was born in 1809 in the
Lincolnshire Wolds and was
the most successful poet of
Victorian times, succeeding
William Wordsworth as Queen
Victoria's Poet Laureate - he
served for more than 40 years.
The Tennyson Trail,
launched in 2009 on the
200th anniversary of his
birth, runs for 130 miles and
takes in his inspirational
haunts across the wolds,
including his home village
of Somersby, Bag Enderby
where his father was rector,
and his school in Louth.
He also loved the sea and
frequently recited poems
aloud on visits to the coast.
