Enid Blyton's
Famous Five
series

(1942)
This collection of children's
adventure novels began 75
years ago with the publication
of Five on a Treasure Island.
Enid intended it as the first
of maybe six books, but they
were so successful she wrote 21
that, even today, sell more than
two million copies a year. The

Timmy - take place in the
children's holidays after they
have returned from their
respective boarding schools.
Although criminals and lost
treasure are often involved,
Enid's settings are almost
always rural and enable the
children to spend lots of time
swimming, cycling and enjoying
picnics together - complete
with lashings of lemonade.
To celebrate the anniversary,
the books are being republished
with new covers and the Royal
Horticultural Society is holding
'Famous Five go on a Garden
Adventure' events in which
four RHS gardens - Harlow
Carr, North Yorkshire; Hyde
Hall, Essex; Wisley, Surrey; and
Rosemoor, Devon - will play
host for themed adventure
trails and garden displays,
craft workshops and family
storytelling activities from July.
All four will also be holding
a picnic party on 11 August,
which would have been Enid's
120th birthday, and a spiffing
time is guaranteed for all.
