and processes work smoothly. In Sunrise and
Gracewell homes, the Administrator's role
involves such tasks as managing residents'
bills and certain HR jobs.

Activities Co-ordinator
Every Sunrise and Gracewell home has its
own Activities and Volunteers Co-ordinator.
This role involves planning a wide range
of activities, entertainment and outings
for residents - at least ﬁve a day
- that reﬂect what residents
want to do.
As well as being fun, the
job has its serious side.
Opportunities to get to
know fellow residents are
important for wellbeing
and help to combat
feelings of loneliness.

Sales Adviser

A sales role in a Sunrise
or Gracewell care home is quite
different from sales in most other
organisations. 'We're not just selling
a service,' says Senior Sales Director Sian
Hammer. 'Our role is to help people ﬁnd
the most appropriate level of care for their
needs. Very often, this can be at a time
when both the prospective resident
and their family are upset and need
lots of support and guidance.'

'activities of daily living', such as bathing,
eating or going to the loo.
'The residents are lovely. If you have a
caring heart, you'll love the job,' says Tina,
a Carer from London. 'It can be stressful at
times, obviously, but the feeling you get
from knowing that you've made someone's
day happier is absolutely priceless.'

Housekeeper
Cleanliness and good hygiene are
particularly important in care homes.
Older people are more susceptible to
illness. Housekeepers take care of cleaning
residents' rooms, the home's communal
areas and manage each resident's laundry.

Chef
Food is taken very seriously in Sunrise
and Gracewell care homes. In fact, the
dining team has won national awards for
the quality of its catering. Ingredients are
chosen carefully - all the meat, for instance,

comes from Donald Russell, a Scotlandbased butcher who holds a Royal Warrant
to supply ﬁve of the Queen's households.
In addition to planning daily menus,
Chefs are responsible for meeting the
speciﬁc dietary requirements of individual
residents, who may be on low-salt diets
or need food that helps them to control
illnesses such as diabetes.

Nurse
The vast majority of Nurses in the UK work
for the NHS. But nursing in a care home
can be even more rewarding. 'I spend
most of my time nursing instead of doing
hours of paperwork. It's why I became
a nurse in the ﬁrst place: to make a
difference,' says Julie, a Nurse from one of
the Sunrise homes in the West Midlands.

Administrator
An Administrator in a care home plays
the same key role as in other businesses:

Head of Department
This is an important job because the
Departmental Managers have responsibility
for team management.
Reporting to Senior Managers, they
ensure their particular department is
performing properly.

General Manager
This is the person in overall charge of the
care home. Many people have a care or
nursing background, but a large number
also come into the care sector from other
industries and backgrounds, ranging from
hotels and retail to the armed forces.
