How global electrical supplier Rexel is working to ensure
everyone gets a chance - regardless of age, sex or ethnicity
T
he electrical wholesale and
distribution sector is thought
by many to be a traditional
industry - but things are changing.
Globally, Rexel is one of the market
leaders in the professional distribution of
products and services for the energy world
- in essence an electrical wholesaler with
over 350 branches, and more than 3,000
employees in the UK alone.
The population profile in this country is
becoming more diverse with a rich, deep
mix of backgrounds, both ethnically and
culturally. Taking into account age and
gender diversity too, Rexel is working hard
to play its part in this evolution.

Although many industrial companies
have programmes focused on improving
gender and age diversity, and others
on improving ethnic and racial diversity,
very few have sucessfully managed to
achieve both simultaneously.
Across the organisation, Rexel is also

Embracing diversity
A recent McKinsey study stated: 'We know
intuitively that diversity matters; both in
terms of overall engagement and customer
focus, as well as in purely business terms.'
Research has shown that top companies
that embrace gender, age, racial and
ethnic diversity are more likely to have
financial returns above their national
industry competitors.
Conversely, the report adds, companies
that do not 'move with the times' are less
likely to achieve above-average returns.
There is a strong correlation between
diversity and profitable businesses.
Companies who commit themselves
to diverse leadership teams are more
successful in attracting top talent,
improving their customer orientation,
employee satisfaction and decision making,
women holding senior management roles,
up to and including board members, and
is actively focused on attracting more
women into the organisation and helping
them develop their careers. Within the UK,
women make up 20% of the board - on the
senior management team, the proportion
of women is even higher, at 45%.
Target in sight
A review led by Mervyn Davies, Baron
Davies of Abersoch, on behalf of the
government set a target for top employers
to have a minimum of 33% of women on
their boards. With this in mind, Rexel is
not only certainly on the right track but
also forging forwards.
