Hampshire services. The latter, in particular, is predicted to increase its share of total employment by approximately 4.8%. In the short-to-medium term, the public sector (government and other services) is set to decrease from 32.4% in 2010 to 29.9% in 2026. Aerospace, as aforementioned, is an important growth sector for Hampshire, as is its relationship with the defence industry, with over 6,000 employees in these areas in the county. Farnborough, in North Hampshire, is a hub for aerospace and defence companies and is home to the national headquarters of the UK’s largest aerospace company BAE Systems. The marine sector is also very important to the Solent region in particular, with 40% of it lying within the South of England; the South of Hampshire is an internationally renowned centre for the marine industry. These industries, as well as advanced engineering and many other key drivers of growth rely on highly skilled employees within the county and strong relationships with the higher education and research institutions located in Hampshire. Hampshire has well over 60,000 businesses and approaching 780,000 employees. The range of ICT and digital media companies established in Hampshire employ around 18,000 people. According to the Hampshire Economic Partnership’s report ‘Informing Our Future’, “the University’s ‘Purple Door’ service provides support functions, advice, resources, recruitment and research facilities to businesses. The University currently engages with over 2,000 local businesses including IBM UK Ltd, Iracroft Ltd and Eaton Aerospace.” In March 2008, the Partnership for Urban South Hampshire (PUSH) published the results of a study which found that the sectors currently driving growth in the area are advanced manufacturing, business services and the creative and media industries.
