With the population of North London expected to grow by 15% by 2016, there is forecast to be new business developments to accompany this growth… Manufacturing Although we have witnessed a regional and national decline in manufacturing over the last 20 years, the sector continues to remain strong in the economy of West London, with a 53,000 strong workforce in manufacturing. The sub-region is one
of the only places in the UK that hasn’t undergone mass redundancies in the sector recently. There are several significant industrial developments in the area including Park Royal, which is Europe’s largest industrial estate covering 650 acres. The estate specialises in food and drink, manufacturing, warehousing, distribution and logistics and creative industries. Carillion and GlaxoSmithKline remain the leading employers in this sector. In addition, the Upper Lea Valley, as
well as the Blackhorse Lane and Leyton ‘industrial villages’ in Waltham Forest, constitute one of the largest manufacturing and technology-based industrial clusters in London. Maintaining sufficient industrial land for such purposes is essential moving forward for North London; the sub-region contains nearly 14% of London’s industrial space. Technology Other sectors which are forecast for growth in Central London include technology, media and renewable energy and will create a high demand for office space in the area over the next few years. Technology is a particularly important driver. The area around Old Street known as the Silicon Roundabout, which is enjoying a proliferation of hi-tech companies setting up operations, is definitely a hot spot for all keen jobseekers to be aware of.
As part of our project to build a new Civic Centre in Wembley, we have specified that the contractor should employ 32% of local people.
