WORDS: Jessie Bland|PHOTOGRAPHS: Getty Images COSMETIC SURGERY – NON-SURGICAL PROCEDURES Although cosmetic surgery has become widely available, it’s still important not to rush into any procedure with careful consideration needleWORK and more people are turning to the surgeon’s knife – and needle – to help them in their quest to look and feel great. However, even the non-surgical procedures that can be carried out in a lunchtime, and when you’re wide awake, need as much thought and consideration as when you're going under the knife... W LOOKING GOOD A recent survey has shown that 67% of British women would consider cosmetic surgery to improve their bodies. It’s easy to understand why. For some people, cosmetic surgery can mean far more than an aesthetic tweak. ith modern cosmetic surgery fast becoming acceptable, accessible and affordable, more Confidence and self-esteem are so intrinsically bound up with our looks that having an aspect of that appearance seemingly improved can drastically change a person’s life. Although many of us may be familiar with common surgical procedures such as breast augmentation or facelifts, what about noninvasive procedures? These treatments do not involve surgery, with patients rarely requiring a general anaesthetic, and include Botox (botulinum toxin) injections, which paralyse muscles to minimise the appearance of lines and wrinkles; chemical peels for smoother, more even skin; and dermal fillers which are injected into wrinkles to make creases more shallow, or into lips to add volume. FINDING THE BEST Even procedures like Botox are a serious undertaking SURGEON FOR YOU The decision to have any form of cosmetic surgery is a highly personal one. It’s something you should do for yourself, and not because a partner would like you to have it done, or to fit any kind of ideal image. But once you have decided to go ahead with a procedure, it’s time to start getting practical. Although they may not take a long time, non-surgical procedures are a serious undertaking too, and you want to be sure you’re getting the best professional service on offer. Cosmetic injectable treatments should never be carried out by beauty therapists. 67% OF BRITISH WOMEN WOULD CONSIDER COSMETIC SURGERY TO IMPROVE THEIR BODIES, A RECENT SURVEY SHOWS Always ensure you receive treatment from a cosmetic doctor who is on the General Medical Council’s (GMC) Specialist Register (www.gmc-uk.org) or a registered nurse. Make sure you’re in the know, and ask, ask, ask until you are absolutely satisfied with the information that has been provided. While there can never be any guarantee of success, by following these guidelines you’ll increase your chances of getting the result you’re after. PROFESSIONAL CREDENTIALS When it comes to verifying your doctor’s credentials, you should make sure they are a member of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS; www.baaps.org.uk). And if they’re not, then you have to look more closely into his or her background. n Dr Hilary Jones’ Healthcare guide – West Midlands 039 http://www.gmc-uk.org http://www.baaps.org.uk
