Principality Building
Society may be nearly 160
years old, but it's a highly
progressive organisation

t Principality Building
Society, they say a truly
inclusive culture is one
where you don't have to
bend yourself out of shape to fit in. And
at the UK's sixth largest building society,
this kind of thinking starts at the top.
In 2017, as part of its Diversity &
Inclusion Strategy, the company worked
with the Mind Gym, a consultancy that
offers learning solutions to transform how
employees think and behave. This led to
the creation of a development programme
for senior leaders and key central teams.
Over four months, senior managers
immersed themselves in a variety of topics,
giving them time to learn and think about
how to apply what they'd learned. The
result was a clearer focus on how to attract,
retain and reward people from different
cultures and backgrounds, with both
financial and non-financial experience.

Getting people involved

One of the key aspects of creating a culture
that encourages people to be themselves is
giving everyone a voice. Principality uses
the internal social media platform Yammer
to do that. Yammer gives everyone the
chance to share thoughts, successes and
articles, and start debates. With several
active groups, including LGBT, Chwarae
Teg (Fair Play for Women) and a specific
Diversity & Inclusion group, it's where the
open, accepting culture starts to come alive.

Encourage women to progress

Principality signed up to the Women in
Finance Charter in 2016, which means it's
committed to developing more women
into senior leadership roles. In 2017,
