8 Don't get disheartened
Job hunting can be tough and there
will almost certainly be times when
you feel you're getting nowhere. Keep
going! Remember - while you're
proactive, you're visible. Your first job
is unlikely to be your dream job but it
can help get you where you want to
be - work hard, learn as much as you
can, and treat the role with respect.
Keep in touch with your dream
employer's HR and/or social media
team, updating them on what you're
doing now and how you hope it will be
relevant for a future career with them.

Some careers - such as those in teaching,
journalism or law - may require further
specialist training. A postgraduate
qualification doesn't have to mean
signing up for a master's degree. It's also
possible to do a postgraduate diploma
(PGDip) or certificate (PGCert), which are
courses taught at master's level but
shorter (around 30 or 15 weeks' full-time
study respectively, as opposed to a full
year). Another crucial difference is that
they don't require a written dissertation.
Part-time, online or distance study
options may also be available, making it
easier to combine work experience with
further study. Bear in mind too that it's
also possible to convert a diploma into a
master's by completing a dissertation.
Fees are, on average, around £5,000.
