JOB HUNTING

1 Make your CV work for you
Your CV is often the first thing a
prospective employer will read about you,
so make it count. It needs to stand out
and be effective in a matter of seconds -
it's selling you as the best candidate, so
make sure you grab their interest fast.
Ensure it's worded for the job you're
applying for and that it's relevant. Put
your key skills and specific experience
near the top and make sure it runs to
two to three pages at the most - no
one is going to read more than that.

2 Do the leg work
Don't expect jobs to come to you - you
need to get out there and discover the
companies you want to work for. Once
you've identified businesses you think
would be a good fit, send them your CV.
Target the ones that want to give you a
job, then fill that gap for them.

3 Link up on LinkedIn
Used by more than 500 million people worldwide, LinkedIn is a
bit like an online CV that allows you to connect with like-minded
professionals. You can also use your contacts to help connect with
other people who may be useful to know.
Building up endorsements from people you've worked with helps
to create a fuller profile and give prospective employers a good idea
of your skills and credibility. A top tip: if you want to connect with
someone you admire, it helps if you've already connected with
someone else in their network.

4 Start tweeting

5 Build relationships

Twitter can be an invaluable tool during a
job search. Start by building a bio that
sums you up and specifies what you're
looking for, including a professionallooking photo and a link to your CV. Then
follow people or companies you would
like to work for - people often tweet
when they're changing positions.
When looking for a job, you can use
Twitter's advanced search to specify
location and add in relevant keywords
and hashtags. Recruiters are usually very
active on Twitter and may tweet you links
to jobs that fit the bill.

If you're using a recruitment agency,
get to know the consultants so when
they need to match candidates with
positions they think of you first. Most
agencies concentrate on specific sectors,
so do your research and find the right
consultant for your chosen field. They
will have the contacts you need and
relationships with the right companies.
