to be a
Partner?
Each and every Partner at
the John Lewis Partnership
plays an integral role in the
company's success

S

ince we began trading in 1864,
the John Lewis Partnership
has grown to become the
largest omnichannel retailer in
the UK, with 50 John Lewis shops and a
thriving online business, johnlewis.com.
Waitrose joined the Partnership in 1937
and today there are more than 350 shops
across England, Scotland, Wales and the
Channel Islands, as well as Waitrose.com.
In total, we employ 85,500 staff -
known as Partners - across the UK.
The John Lewis Partnership exists
today because of the ideals of our founder,
John Spedan Lewis. He believed in
industrial democracy, where Partners
share knowledge, power and profit. The
Partnership is owned in trust for its
members, who share the responsibilities
of ownership as well as its rewards.
Our constitution defines the John Lewis
Partnership's principles and the way we
should operate. Our ultimate purpose is
Principle 1: the happiness of all members,
through their worthwhile and satisfying
employment in a successful business.

Ahead of the rest

We are always innovating to stay ahead in
the retail sector. Customer experience is
key to everything we do, and we expect our
Partners to provide the excellent service
our customers have come to expect.
"It's an extraordinary business and
I'm constantly reminded of how we're
surrounded by really talented, passionate
and capable people," says Paula Nickolds,
John Lewis Managing Director. "It's an

amazing privilege to be doing this job.
Our Partners are our secret sauce. They're
the opportunity for us to differentiate."

Working for everyone

Every year, we hold a Bring Yourself to Work
week, organised by Partners for Partners,
which encourages Partners to recognise the
importance of engaging in conversations
about diversity and inclusion at work.
"It's vital that every Partner has the
opportunity to reach their potential," says
Nicola, Diversity and Inclusion Manager.
"Inclusion is fundamental, as it enables
a culture that helps people flourish.
Our primary concern is to ensure we're

achieving a great mix of Partners."
Our Partners run eight networks that
exist to inspire and influence on the topic
of inclusion: LINKage, Working Parents,
UNITY, Gender Equality Network (GEN),
Pride in the Partnership, Faith, Belief and
Religion, Ability and School of Thought.
Most networks have senior sponsorship:
GEN, for example, is sponsored by
Group Finance Director Patrick Lewis.
