PROMOTION

Women in waste
The traditionally maledominated waste industry
is always encouraging
women to join and help
to change perceptions.
Discover how one woman
found a rewarding career
with FCC Environment
Shannon Morbey,
26, from Doncaster,
South Yorkshire

What job do you do and where
do you do it?
"I'm an assistant contract manager,
managing waste removal at
FCC Environment. I'm based in
Conisbrough, South Yorkshire and cover
the Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham
metropolitan borough council areas."
What are the best bits about
your current role?
"I enjoy the variety of work and
projects I have to manage - it includes
everything from managing activities on
site to council meetings and designing
signage and induction leaflets."
How did you get into this role?
"I really enjoyed the waste management
module on my postgraduate diploma at
university and wanted to see what the
industry had to offer. I joined a graduate
programme at FCC Environment
in 2015, and started work as an
assistant contract manager in 2017."

"Don't let reservations or stereotypes
hold you back. Waste is a vast and everchanging industry full of interesting
challenges and opportunities, and
requires all sorts of skills"

What would you say to people
- especially women - who were
having second thoughts about
going into waste management?
"Don't let reservations or stereotypes
hold you back. If a role interests you,
go for it! Waste is a vast and everchanging industry full of interesting
challenges and opportunities,
and requires all sorts of skills."

You're well qualified. Did that
mean you didn't need any other
support from the company?
"Yes I am, but waste is a complex industry.
FCC Environment has supported me and
given me every opportunity to develop
my skills further. I use skills from a
variety of sources every day, from my
English degree to the waste-management
training I'm undergoing presently."

So it isn't all about qualifications?
"No. FCC Environment is keen to get
the right individuals for the business,
above and beyond qualifications.
Finding individuals with the right
attitude and skills is its priority."
