JOBS & CAREERS SPRING 2018 - 257

Eurostar's
employees come
from 35 nations and
speak a range of
languages beyond
French and English
Bianca Schobel,
scrum master

Another area where we are focusing on
the gender balance is in IT, a traditionally
male-dominated sector both in and
outside of Eurostar. To help tackle this
we have signed up to the Women in Tech
Charter, which commits us to working
towards increasing our female tech
population. In the past 18 months, the
percentage of women in our IT division
it has increased from 6% to 10% - a
figure we want to continue to grow.
To hold ourselves accountable, we
have a grassroots Inclusion & Diversity
Committee comprising colleagues from
across the business. A survey conducted by
the committee led to the recommendation
of diversity and unconscious-bias training.
This will start this year with the leadership
team and top managers, before being
rolled out to anyone with responsibility
for recruiting people into Eurostar.

I love working
with people and
I think that's
what makes me
a great scrum
master, as the
role requires
me to facilitate
team working
and manage
the process for
information
exchange in
Agile teams.
I graduated in
Romania in 2009
and then worked
in quality
assurance before
getting a job as
a scrum master. I
came to London
in 2014. Being
able to travel
made me think
about joining
Eurostar. When
I heard they
were hiring
scrum masters,
I decided to
give it a try.

My Eurostar
story has just
started but it's
been an amazing
adventure so
far. As part of
my role, I am
looking at ways
we can attract
people to work
in IT at Eurostar,
and I want to
work to and
demonstrate
how women
can succeed
in tech roles.
I'm really
happy to have
the opportunity
to work with a
really diverse
population
of people.

SPRING 2018

Jon McCahill, international
driver manager
I started as a
trainee train
driver with South
West Trains in
2000. After
several years of
driving and then
instructing, I
joined Eurostar.
I've enjoyed
working in an
environment
in which I hear
many languages
spoken and work
with colleagues
with different
backgrounds and
perspectives.
It's that level
of diversity
that made me
comfortable
enough to be out
as a gay man in
my workplace.
Many of the
operational
roles at Eurostar,
including driver,
tend to be

filled by a
less diverse
population,
particularly in
terms of gender.
I've been keen
to explore ways
of increasing the
opportunities
for women.
It's about
creating a
mindset in which
people see the
advantages of
greater diversity.
Challenging
misconceptions
and unconscious
bias takes time,
but I'm hugely
encouraged
by the actions
already taken.
