Chicken sexer

Farmers need to check whether
their chicks are male or female so
they can be reared appropriately.
Being able to check the sex of
chicks is a surprisingly lucrative
occupation, but the British Poultry
Council has reported difficulties in
recruiting people. This could have
a lot to do with the fact that the
job involves delicately squeezing
a little poo out of the chick to
open the "vent" (anus) to look
inside and check for a bump. If
there is a bump, it's a male chick.
What skills and qualifications
do I need? You'll need good
eyesight, patience and nimble
hands because you'll be expected to
look at up to 1,000 chicks an hour
in a 12-hour shift. No qualifications
are necessary, but it takes around
three years of on-the-job learning
before you are fully trained.
How much can I earn? With
experience, up to £40,000.

Ethical hacker

Instead of stealing information
from individuals and companies,
ethical hackers break into
companies' IT systems to test
how secure they are. Also
known as intrusion testing or
red teaming, it involves seeking
loopholes and vulnerabilities that
a malicious hacker could exploit.
What skills and qualifications do
I need? Most skilled hackers are
self-taught, so it's not an industry
that always requires exam results.
However, a bachelor's degree in
computer science or information
technology can be helpful, although
you could work up to this level as a
developer for an internet security
firm. You could also study to
become a certified ethical hacker
on a specialised training course.

You'll be expected to look at up to
1,000 chicks an hour in a 12-hour shift
Above:
experienced
chicken sexers
can earn up
to £40,000

How much can I earn? The
average salary is £35,000,
but it can rise to £80,000.

Golf ball diver

Every time you hit your tee shot
into the ornamental lake, the ball
isn't gone forever. Someone is paid
to dive in and fish out lost balls,
so they can be cleaned up and
resold. Divers work as part of a
team and are likely to have a very
early start, completing their day's
work before the golfers arrive.
Divers also need to stick to
strict Health & Safety Executive
regulations on scuba diving at

work, and must ensure they have
the right equipment and at least
five people with them on each
dive. It's physically demanding
work and the job usually involves
cleaning up and packaging the
balls, and completing paperwork.
What skills and qualifications
do I need? You'll need an HSEapproved commercial scuba diving
certificate. Courses take around
four weeks and cost about £5,000.
You'll also need to undergo regular
medicals. Contact the HSE for a list
of approved diving qualifications.
How much can I earn? The
average salary is £25,000.
