JOBS & CAREERS SPRING 2018 - 223

SPRING 2018

and processes that are now best practice
across the business were first suggested
by employees and then implemented with
great success. The level of autonomy given
to employees gives them the opportunity
to make a mark on the business and
a real sense of empowerment.
Aldi's buying director, Lucy Roper,
who managed a portfolio of stores before
progressing to the buying department, has
experienced first-hand how her choices
made an impact on the business. She is
responsible for designing and sourcing
products for Aldi Scotland's bakery and
cakes department, meeting suppliers
and keeping on top of emerging trends.
"Buying is a long process - it can take
months from initial concept through
to getting a product on the shelves - so
seeing the final product in store is what
I look forward to the most," she says.
"Working in the buying department has
been a complete eye-opener. Having
worked in stores for a number of years,

it's great to see how the business is run
from a completely different perspective."
Aldi's buying department is dedicated
to sourcing the best-quality products at
the right price for consumers. Aldi is
currently recruiting buying assistants
at its head office, offering an attractive
salary of £30,580, rising to £35,710.

Record breaking

The growth of Aldi, the UK's fifth largest
supermarket and Britain's favourite

supermarket as voted for in the Which?
2018 Customer Satisfaction Survey,
shows no signs of stopping. In 2017
alone, the company increased its market
share and achieved record-breaking
sales, reaching £10bn for the first time
since opening the doors to its first
store, in Birmingham, back in 1990.
With some ambitious expansion plans
in place - including opening the 1,000th
Aldi store in the next three years - there
has never been a more exciting time to be
part of an Aldi team, which shares in the
retailer's success every step of the way.
