designer/
developer

Product development means
overseeing the conception, creation
and packaging of new products,
while designers generate ideas for
products and marketing, including
point-of-sale (POS) displays.
What qualifications do I need?
Both require degrees: in marketing
or business for developers and in
art-based subjects such as graphic
design or fashion for designers.
How much can I earn? Around
£23,000 for designers, rising with
experience, while developers start
on £32,000, rising to £52,000.

Customer
services
assistant

Dealing with customers isn't just for
shop staff - the public also contact
customer services, often based in a
call centre. The prime directive is to
deal with problems as efficiently as
possible, leaving customers with a
good impression of the company.
What qualifications do I need?
There are no set requirements, but
good GCSEs are a bonus.
How much can I earn? Salaries
are usually above minimum wage
and can rise as high as £30,000.
Management roles range from
£20,000 for trainees to £70,000.

Retail
manager

You'll be responsible for inspiring
a team to give the best customer
service and meet sales targets.
Other aspects of the role include
training and development, sales
data analysis and spotting trends.
What qualifications do I need?
Any degree could get you on to a
graduate training programme, but
some do work their way up. In the
online world, managers need
excellent technical skills and
platform/database knowledge,
which usually requires a degree in
business, finance, IT or analytics.
How much can I earn? Anywhere
from £20,000 to £70,000.

Sales
adviser

Working as a sales adviser -
which can mean anything from
manning a till to offering expertise
to customers - will give you
valuable skills and experience.
More than half the people in
these roles work part-time.
What qualifications do I need?
Most roles don't require any
formal qualifications, but good
communication skills are key.
How much can I earn? Salaries
start around the minimum wage
(£7.83 an hour for over-25s from
April 2018) and increase with
experience. You may also earn
commission and bonuses, and
receive employee discounts.
