Embrace career development opportunities
One thing that I find striking looking back is just how much
I've enjoyed working for Sunrise. Of course, a huge part
of this is the fantastic team and the wonderful residents
that I continue to encounter, but I also greatly appreciate
the range of opportunities for continuous professional
development that Sunrise has provided me with over
the last ten years.

I would strongly recommend that care professionals seek
out companies and managers which actively value training
that enables them to progress. Embracing career
development opportunities and working for a company
that believes in excellent CPD has been the secret to my
career success and job satisfaction, I would encourage
all those looking to build excellent and satisfying careers
in care to heed my advice and do the same.

The importance of encouraging and facilitating career
development is a key part of Sunrise's approach. Every
year a substantial amount of time is allocated for team
members to stay in touch with the latest standards,
approaches and ideas in care, and progression is
encouraged. For example, over the course of my career
I have taken training courses in sales, leadership and team
development, and gained a Diploma in Management and
Leadership in care. These courses and qualifications give
me a deeper understanding of what it takes to provide
excellent care and strengthened areas where I was lacking
in confidence.

Work for a management team that values their
team members' CPD
My positive experiences mean that as a manager
I actively encourage and support my team to develop
and grow, listening to their challenges to help them
to progress their career at a pace that suits them.
I particularly encourage my team to take part in the annual
Heart and Soul Recognition Programme which Sunrise
runs to celebrate the achievements of outstanding team
members who go 'above and beyond'. I also have an open
door policy for both residents and those working within
our community which I find works well in terms of keeping
a finger on the pulse from all directions and ensuring the
right balance for everyone.
