Inga Grimailaite's Story

A

s a general manager at Sunrise Senior Living UK,
I love what I do. Working in the care sector is
incredibly rewarding and making a difference on a
daily basis offers a deep sense of satisfaction. Yet working
in social care can also be demanding, coming with its fair
share of challenges along the way.
As my career has progressed I have come to appreciate
just how essential it is to embrace continuous professional
development (CPD) opportunities and strive to acquire
new skills to meet these challenges. Here, I describe my
career journey with Sunrise and share some of my tips
for navigating and building a successful career in the
care sector.

How I began my career in care
After completing my economics degree I knew I had a
strong desire and passion to work in care, but with little
experience of the industry, it was hard to know where
to begin. I was very lucky to find Sunrise Senior Living
UK- the company saw my passion and offered me
a position on the Sunrise of Virginia Water team.
Once I began working for Sunrise I soon found there
were lots of opportunities for career development and
progression which I found incredibly beneficial and
exciting. I studied, trained and progressed and soon found
my hard work was rewarded, when I became Lead Care
Manager, taking on far more responsibility coordinating
and supervising staff.

The value of working in a range of roles
A key part of my success, and a top tip I would give to
all young professionals, is to try your hand at a variety of
different care-related roles. I found each position I tried

For example, while on the wellbeing team I had
responsibility for overseeing medical appointments and
medications and got to work with very knowledgeable
nurses who I learnt an awful lot from. I also enjoyed
working as a reminiscence (memory care) coordinator
leading the team that looks after our residents living
with dementia. In this role, I became more confident in
communicating with residents' family and friends and
learnt how best to get them more involved in their loved
ones' lives.
The wide array of roles that Sunrise encouraged me to try
meant that I was continuously challenged and trusted
with responsibility, all of which boosted my understanding
of the care sector and contributed to my personal
career development.
