out in teaching or thinking about
working in further education.
If you wish to teach an academic
subject, you'll need a degree. In
order to teach a vocation, you'll
need experience in that field
and will be expected to hold a
minimum of a level 3 qualification
in the subject. You'll also need a
teaching qualification relevant to
the level of teaching responsibility.
How much can I earn? Salaries
start at £24,000; with experience
you can earn between £36,000 and
£40,000. Lecturers in leadership
and management roles can earn
between £40,000 and £80,000.

Working in further
or higher education
opens up a huge range
of job options, and not
just in teaching

ost people
associate
teaching
with
school-age
children,
but many teenagers and young
adults continue into further and
higher education. There are many
different roles available at these
levels, and they're not just about
teaching. There are openings in
administration and maintenance,
while acting as a learning mentor,
researcher or technician could
also be something to consider.

Further education

There are currently 2.2 million
students studying at 273 colleges
in England. Further education is
a huge area, providing academic,
vocational and professional courses
in diverse settings, including youth
offender institutes and the armed
forces. There are opportunities to
teach across different qualification
levels and types, either during
the day or in the evening. Many
vocational FE teaching jobs offer
flexible and part-time hours.

Further education lecturer
As a lecturer, you'll be a personal
tutor to students, supervising
practical work - including work
placements and field trips - keep
learning records and plan lessons.
What qualifications do I need?
The level 3 award in education and

How much can I earn? Starting
salaries are £15,000 to £18,000,
rising to £25,000 and more with
management experience.
