Brewery worker

Publican

Marketing executive

If you want to learn the tricks
of the beer trade, a brewery
worker is a good starting
point, as your job will focus
on the beer-making process
from start to finish. With
experience, you could become
a supervisor, and further
training could lead to a career
as a technical or craft brewer.
What skills and qualifications
do I need? Couch potatoes
need not apply - this job is
physical. You also need to be
practical and numerate, and
have good concentration and
communication skills. There
are no set entry requirements,
but some employers may
ask for GCSEs grades 9 to
4 (A* to C), especially in
maths and English. Prior
experience is an advantage.
How much can I earn? Salaries
start around £13,000, rising
to £25,000 with experience.

Running a pub isn't for the
faint-hearted, but if you're
not afraid of hard work, have
great people skills and a good
head for business, it may be
your calling. If you own your
own pub, there are no limits
to what you can achieve.
What skills and qualifications
do I need? You need to be well
organised and a good leader.
Experience of bar work and
customer service is vital. Some
larger chains offer graduate
management trainee schemes,
which require a degree or
HND. However, just about
anyone can buy and run a pub.
How much can I earn?
Publicans employed by a
brewery earn £20,000 to
£50,000. You can earn more
as the owner of a successful
pub. Some breweries
offer free accommodation
and living expenses.

If you have a good way with
words, can think on your feet
and pride yourself on being a
good negotiator, a marketing
job specialising in the drinks
industry could be a good fit.
You'll be responsible for
promoting a company's
products, services or brand.
What skills and qualifications
do I need? You need to be a
creative thinker, organised
with excellent planning, IT and
writing skills. You'll usually
need a foundation degree,
HND or marketing, advertising
or business-based degree. If
you have experience as a
marketing or public relations
assistant, it will stand you in
good stead. Apprenticeships
are also available.
How much can I earn? From
£18,000 to £35,000. As a
marketing director, you can
earn up to £100,000.

Microbrewer
A microbrewery is an independent brewery that
focuses on flavour and technique, producing only
small amounts of beer. The sector is flourishing.
What skills and qualifications do I need? You'll
need to learn the art of brewing. You can do this
on a short course (try Brewlab or Brew-School) or
you can do a degree, such as the one run by the
International Centre for Brewing & Distilling at

Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. Persistence
and patience are key, as is a good head for
business. Be warned that the job requires a lot
of heavy lifting and cleaning.
How much can I earn? It depends on the success
of your product. You need to take your start-up
costs into account. The smallest brewing kit from
PBC Brewery Installations costs over £11,000.
